First of all let me start off by saying that I’m from the south…I’ve lived in North Carolina practically all my life. I’m 23 years old, and I’m college educated. Not saying I’m better than anyone else, but I’m saying I’m not ignorant. The majority of my family is from New York and Cali though, so we have this conversation all the time.
Everyone knows where hip-hop started. It’s a known an accepted fact. New York niggas put hip-hop/rap on the map. But where did the idea come from? Jazz, skat, etc.
You have to go back a little far in history partnah. Jazz started in New Orleans. Back then the NO was where you go to get loose. A lot of things were tolerated there that wasn’t tolerated in other parts of the country.
Around about 1920 due to prohibition and what not, the Jazz movement migrated from New Orleans to Chicago. There were jobs in Chicago and black musicians went to where the money was. Toward the end of the decade the Harlem Renaissance came into play. Again…more movement.
If you look at the rhyme scheme of Jazz music, and skat and bebop music….it mirrors what we call hip-hop. Basically niggas just began rhyming over the beat instead of focusing as much on the instruments. That’s why tracks back in the day were so drum heavy.
And yeah hip hop was about giving props to where you’re from and repping your region (i.e. South Bronx, The Bridge, etc.), but if you wanna be an ass about it…all New York and Cali and wherever the hell else you are from niggas have relatives in the south. YOu think you were there first and Niggas migrated south??? Uh … no. You came from the south and went north. That’s why if you ever fucked up in school and didn’t know how to act, your momma shipped your ass down south to your grandma. True??? I thought so.
Basically if you follow the roots and origins of music it’s a cycle. Shit repeats itself. Granite, southern rhyme scheme may not be as complex as others I’ve heard, but it’s just as relevant. East coast rap has been asleep for about 7 years cause after Pac died, New York blew again. The south has always been there though. UGK, Geto Boys etc. Remember the Hot Boys? No Limit? East Coast was just doing it’s thing…now that it’s quieted down, the south can’t shine???

UGK are the Fat Joes of the South. These guys act like they get so much respect and think that they are the Spokesmen for everything that’s great about the South, and yet, the cold hard numbers tell a different story. With the exception of one album, all their albums have been flops. All this bullshit they are doing now is for no other purpose other than to get attention.
