This is the type of “BLACK” thing to do, that we need to see more of in America and Africa. Black youth in America have yet to be embraced in such a $40 million way. I always wondered why there were NO independently BLACK college preparatory schools in America. I mean most, if not all of the affluent blacks, send their children to such schools, knowing the quality of education their child will receive. Everyone from Bill Cosby to Dallas Austin to Wise Intelligent (although NOT affluent) have sent their kids to prep schools which are renowned for their academic standards and the social networks that they offer, but few have taken the effort to open or help get one opened for black youth in America. Most prep schools in the country do fulfill their “affirmative-action” requirement and admit about 50 black kids out of about 550 students, but such boarding schools are needed for a predominantly black student-body.
Many have criticized Oprah’s effort saying that building a $40 million dollar leadership school in the poverty ridden Henley-On-Klip South Africa is “too much” for kids who are “barely eating.” My opinion is that such a boarding school offers poor students some much needed room to think and grow without the everyday burden of worrying about “what’s for dinner” or “where will I sleep” and more time to focus on putting themselves in Oprah’s shoe’s that they can someday do the same for other poor youth. So, hats off to Oprah with hopes that a sister school can be opened for black youth in America and a bridge/dialogue, and exchange of knowledge and culture be established between black youth in America and Africa. It’s long over due!!!!

……….oprah should be made a goddess, I love this sister! we talk about it, and she does it…… I dreamed of such a school for black kids, here in america and abroad. A school that meet the specific needs of black kids and ultmately black adults as well. A school that would help us to truely make sense of our experiences as a people, and help give us proper direction and trajectory of thought………… all that dreaming on my part, a dream that came from a profound love I have for people of color; all that dreaming, and here this sister did it without blinking an eye. I can’t continue without mentioning the fact that I have love for our white brothers & sisters to, but you must understand we (blacks) need to get ourselves together with, as well as without you….. one love.

dee1 sorry but…lets be intelligent think, and realize that everything counts. Helping who Oprah is helping benefits the earth. Every person we help benefits us all. Change happens one person at a time. Its negative thinking like yours that perpetuates the very divisions of which you speak. If people are people as you say then whats the problem because she is definately helping needy people.
truth1 im sayin that people always help the same people. im not sayin theyre racist. didnt ludacris try to do somethin in south africa or did somethin in south africa? ( i dont remember) madonna adopted a malawian baby. people should be more like angelina jolie (tomb raider, mr. & mrs. smith) she adopted a baby from cambodia as well as a baby from eithiopia. she helps people all around the world. she is a good example of helping everyone.
I know africa strugglin and all that but i know of a couple thousand black that live in america thats livin just as bad and ruff as the people in africa.
2007 is the year of solutions and success like Wise said! Oprah saw a problem and offered help. Thats good. Celebrate that. Theres no progress in wasting energy trying to spin her good deed into something negative. How can we do our part? What can we read to add on to our mental growth? Project positivity.

What Oprah is doing is a commendable humanitarian effort. There’s some idiot that stated that Madonna adopted a Malawian kid; that’s a publicity stunt no different than adopting an abandoned pet. It doesn’t benefit the needy at large in any way. What Oprah is doing is called empowerment. In short, if you rid the world of iliteracy, to rid it of porverty. So what if Oprah built a $40 mil school? She is definately not wasting it on jewellery so that she can floss to the poor in ghetto in a music video.
Although im thankful that Oprah did this, I can’t help but feel she is obviously ignoring the poor black kids in America, as many have pointed out.
Its a double edged sword. I feel oprah on this cause no matter what shes helping her people, her African people not excluding the ones in america with that statement cause we’re all African. She has helped African Americans do not forget the charity she has on the side the Angel Network. But I do feel more African celebrities in this country should stand up and help.I mean Cosby just talks but he doesnt do but I do think they should spread the love cause Im Nigerian and we gets no love when it comes to stuff like that. And there are a lot of African kids in America that need help cause a lot of them are in debt because of college loans. So I think sometimes Oprah is kinda one sided with her thoughts. Remember the celebration of Black woman all that money spent on women with money how about the diamond necklaces couldve been money sponsored by companies for African Peoples Development all over the world.

Ophra is setting a new standard for what a human being with resources should do with their money. Her understanding of how real revolution happens through education is impressive. Schools like this one should be set up for girls all over the world. It has been shown that educating girls in poverty torn contries is one of the main factors in transforming the quality of life for a society, and bringing fresh prespective and vision to human rights.
Hold up did somebody say they know some kids in a America who have it as bad as the kids in Africa. Dude what you smokin, ain’t nobody in America got it as rough as they got in Africa. You need to take a trip over there, they don’t even have clean water, they using the bathroom in some hole in the ground. Yeah there are kids in America who have it rough but they are filthy rich compared to those in Africa. When you think of Africa-american you dont see anything visible that they have done.
But what Oprah has done is a true love for Africa, and Oprah this from the bottom of my heart “our children who will attend this school will always love and bless you”. My daughter has been on my neck to get her the website of this school and I pray and hope that she will get an opportunity to study from this school.
