I’m Still Here!

Sadat XWhat’s good, people? The holidays just passed here on Riker’s Island. It was rather uneventful. At Christmas, a somber mood permeated throughout the dorm. The guys somberly reflected on missed family and friends, and their current situations. I basically did the same. This was the second year I was incarcerated for the holidays. I’m determined to make this the last time.

From the dorm windows, we can see New York City. Imagine how hard that was on New Year’s Eve. To top that off, we had a dorm search at 8 a.m. [on New Year’s Day]. I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of James Brown. A lot of the younger guys here have no idea of his importance in music history. Saddam Hussein’s death was a major topic discussed, also. I personally believed that we should have let Iraq handle its own problems. I feel we have ulterior motives for our involvement there. That being said, I still wish for the safety of our troops there.

The holidays have been emotional and, in a dorm of 60 men, there’s bound to be friction. The whole jail, for that matter, is on edge. The Bloods, in particular, have been very active. They’re never-ending battle against the Hardbacks — Crips — as they call them. The Latin Kings have been quiet, but their numbers are huge. The Gods are also present.

I may be able to finagle an early release from this cage, but it remains to be determined by the powers in Albany, where the parole board is located. The question of parole looms heavy, also. One year of no smoking piff or any police contact whatsoever is tight. I have two violent felonies already. One more, and I’m in the mountains. I must also be able to travel abroad; being that is where a major part of my livelihood comes from.

Overall, I’m okay. I’m writing, exercising and learning to control my temper. There’s an absolute no-win policy in confrontations with the officers, especially the women — some of whom I feel forget that we’re grown men.

Peace for now!

What up Sadat, hold it down you’ll be good, you dont have long to go now, as far as refining yourself I see that you are doing that, sometimes in life it takes things like this to get us in place as harsh as it sounds, sometimes we probably wouldn’t have learned any other way. So now that you are working towards your post phase of refinement you got a lot to look forward to, but keep your eyes open, and stay in meditation and prayer, because near the end of your trouble comes one last major storm, so be on the lookout and do what is right and you will come out of this one alright!!!

Anyway, I been preaching to these young cats about the contribution of James Brown in hip hop, like I said “without James Brown hip hop would have definitely been dead”. I just copped your last joint “Black October” that shit is hot, I been puttin mad katz on it, that shit is fire, for it to be a rushed album you did the damn thing, I know you are going to come out with some serious heat on another level just hold it down and keep it movin, you said your greatest challenge was going to be “writing outside of the cell” well did you master that? Anyway hold it down, Remember make technical moves!!One!
