So browsing the web yesterday I came across this topic on digg about an article called “Hip-Hop Isnt Dying It Just Sucks” and some of the comments on digg were bugged out so I had to share some of them that caught my eye….
“Hip-Hop as far as I’m concerned was a movement destroyed by commerciality and over saturation. Hip-hop is overdue for a fresh wave or a new direction.”
“The way you silence a group of rebels, is over saturate their messages, and give them so much money that they completely lose focus on the purpose of their movement.”
“Chris Rock: You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America’s Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn’t want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named ‘Bush’, ‘Dick’, and ‘Colon.’ Need I say more?”
“Now it sucks, yeah. Some time ago, when there were bands like “Niggers With Attitudes” the music truly had an angry passion. Those guys did grow up on the streets and their music showed it. Now, we have asshats like Kanye West who sing ghetto, but grew up in a home far larger than I ever imagined.
…But now rap is at the point where it is a $$ maker and nothing else. The angry music that started it has been replaced by vulgar crap.”
“Hip-hop will never die. If classical music isn’t dead, then hip-hop will live on and live strong no matter what. It survived Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer, it will survive Mims and Young B.”
“First of all, if you are basing a music genre based on what is being displayed on MTV or BET, you would think all music sucks. This isnt a rule, but a circumstance created by the major label business practice which basically is to manufactures music as toelit paper. Although there is always going to be a few talented artists that make it through, most are to be thrown out in order to make way for the next roll in which to wipe your ass. Focus groups will sample teens for what the latest “cool” trend is. Is it rap? punk? metal? emo? Whatever it is, they will exploit it until it is “not cool” or “dead”. Everything is pretty shallow, requiring no investment to the listener. This is what they think will ensure a steady cash flow, with hope that little johny will move on to the next trend and spend his $15
The fact is, the toilet paper model is steadily failing. They are losing money due to their own failure to adapt. These people are the same assholes who fight the internet rather then embrace it. The playing feild is now level. Independant lables are maintaing a respectable fanbase. Of course the majors are losing money. When you release the “newest hot shit”, little johny who cares nothing about the music, is going to download that new hot shit, and flush it in 6 months.”
What do you think?

I agree with the post that said when they over saturated hip hop that what killed it. It went from an art form, skill, talent to anyone with the most degrading lyrics WINS! I also agree with the post that says hip hop needs to take a BATH! Wash off all the dirt balls and come back clean and ready to ride.
hip hop isn’t dead. Labels just won’t sign artists who really have shit to say. these days, it takes $ to get $$. the only good rappers producing sh*t right now are the ones with their own independent labels. i may jus be high as a mutha#%$! right now..but that’s my view on it.
I will agree also. Hip Hop, really rap is at a all time, but there are true artist out there that is not being heard, so many of them. They don’t have the money to back them up like the major artist, which sucks, but put out quality music. The major labels are gonna give you the red carpet treatment cause you have a buzz and they gonna build on that, but will happen when you a dud? shelf your ass. It’s a quick dollar to get, but what happen to the real lyrics of it? there was a time when lyrics was the shit, to me its still the shit, but everyone want to make a quick club banger and when you get the album it sucks. It’s going to be a time and a place when it’s going to come around in full circle and stop messing with these wack artist they have out now, they all sound the same to me. Mtv and Bet have all the same shit, including radio. That’s why i download, but if its a good quilty of the music, i will support and buy. Until then, I;m still waiting on the Joe Budden album. That’s an example of talent going to waste on that roster, soooo backwards.
I think hip-hop is not dead at all. It’s alive, but it’s alive like a dying man kept alive by hostpital wires and machines.
The problem is: all this commercial shit.
I mean I can name 10 rappers any time, that are just rapping about their toughness, money, rides, bitches… you know the usual shit. They are in it for the money.
Like: Paul Wall (who?), shitloads of Young , and… altough I like them, G-Unit.
Hip Hop should be cleaned of the crap, or the commercial shit should have a different name like “Com-Hop”, I guess it leaves the crap out, and hip-hop could breath by him/her self again.
It is a shame that we support the rappers of today for going commercial. Does anyone remember that this is the reason MC Hammer fell off the charts and could never climb them again. Hammer must be pissed off because now commercial rappers are not seen as “selling out”.
^^^damn I never thought about that, you could almost say Hammer was ahead of his time lol, but it’s sad that “selling out” is accepted now..
ay you know what, i never thought about that sh*t either..maaan, its cuz these days it’s all about getting that feddi. money makes the world go ’round.
i agree 100% with the last post.
Hip Hop needs a LAXATIVE !
