Jay-Z - Kingdom ComeAlbum Review by:

Jay-Z has spent the past ten-plus years building up his kingdom. Now, that it has finally come (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam), the man known as the “King of NY” showcases a few chinks in his armor.
Arguably, the most anticipated album (besides Nas’) that few expected to even come out (…right), falls short on numerous levels. Take for example, 'Oh, My God' produced by Just Blaze. The Janis Joplin-sampled track finds Hov trying to find his footing on the beat as he takes us on a ride from his office to the hood. The kid from Brooklyn has seemed to jumble up his recipe of strong street songs and savvy club bangers.
'Anything', produced by The Neptunes and featuring ATL-crooner, Usher is possibly the worst song since 'Sunshine' or 'The City is Mines' and makes 'Change Clothes' sound like 'Streets is Watching'. Beyoncé can’t even save her beau on the collaborative effort, 'Hollywood'. The four-plus minute track highlights a “grown and sexy” side of Jay and in the end he just comes off lazy with the verse.
With friends like “Chris and Gwyneth” and having the best producers at his disposal (Just Blaze, Kanyé, The Neptunes, and Dr. Dre) – Jay treads over similar ideas and themes about age. None is this more prevalent (and works) on the Dr. Dre produced '30-Something'. The master of trends coasts calmly over Dre’s bouncy beat and strong piano strikes. As we listen to the maturation of Jay-Z, he explains how he no longer has the “bright watch,” but the “right watch.” Other highlights include newcomer B-Money’s 'The Prelude' and the lead single 'Show Me What You Got'.
But the crown jewels on this album are, undeniably, 'Kingdom Come', 'Lost Ones', 'Minority Report', and 'Beach Chair'. Each song showcases a different side of Shawn Corey Carter. As Just Blaze cuts up a funky sample of the late Rick James, Hovito digs his heels into his territory and maintains that “the boy is back.” He does indeed show growth, as we witness one of the most honest and humbling songs with 'Lost Ones'. As Superman turns into Clark Kent, he takes the listener on a journey as he talks about the Roc-A-Fella breakup, Beyoncé, and the death of his nephew. The good doctor puts together a simple beat and allows Jay’s vocals to shine brightly for all to hear.'Beach Chair' is simply amazing. The experiment with Marcy’s finest and Coldplay’s coldest, Chris Martin works to both strengths, equally.
Life may be a dream, but the reality is that Jay did not make a classic album like the world expected him too. Can the fans be mad? Even with the numerous subliminal darts to foes and former friends alike with 'Dig A Hole', Jay’s new blueprint showcases his growth and mind state. A valiant effort given by a man who has the whole world dancing to the beat of his drum, Jay-Z’s kingdom isn’t going to crumble any time soon. But "Kingdom", the album is a disheartening effort to say the least. His loyal subjects ask more from their king.
