Paul Wall - Get Money, Stay True

Album Review by: Kevin L. Clark
Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Paul Wall-Get Money, Stay TruePaul Wall is something like an anomaly. His foray into the mainstream garnered him the attention of masses, but not any of the criticism that’s leveled upon most White MC’s not named Marshall. The last effort from him went platinum and now Mr. Slayton is looking to double his dollars with his latest entitled, 'Get Money, Stay True'.

Staying true to his mantra, Wall constructs a 14 track anthem dedicated to that purple drank, the Houston lifestyle, women and money. The expensive taste is elaborated on the first single, “Break ‘Em Off,” produced by Mr. Lee. In fact, Mr. Lee has his hand deep in the album, cooking up eight of the beats on the album. His distinctive H-Town sound, which utilizes the screwed up chorus and pounding bass lines, adds to increasing Paul’s appeal on the disc. Even when you interject an almost scene-stealing, Lil’ Keke, on the album’s single cut, you won’t even be mad because Wall’s rag-to-riches appeal doesn’t come off as trite.

On “I’m Throwed,” Jermaine Dupri infused the A-Town’s bounce with Houston’s pounding drums. Coupled with syncopated handclaps and sharp snares, Paul Wall talks about his favorite drank with Dupri playing hook-man. The Ice Man crafts a club banger without it truly being such. But the material excess goes into overdrive in a bad way on the song, “Call Me What U Want.” The lyrics are common and uninspiring to the listener. Although, it shouldn’t be surprising that the song lives up to the album title’s theme, it drags on too long. In fact, an example of where the meaning of 'Get Money, Stay True' works is on the joint, “Everybody Know Me.” Featuring a very lively Snoop Dogg, it’s the LBC legend who drops a show-stopping verse:

I’m the only rapper known by your grandmother,
And your preacher, and your teacher, ain’t that a trip?!
Moshe, moshe, ackanagu – ain’t that a bitch?!
That’s Japanese, lil’ homie, you should learn to mingle,
See Snoop Dogg is international… and bilingual...

The album’s melodic and soulfulness turns into a family thing as wife, Crys Wall appears with Freeway on “On The Grind.” The collaboration works as Mr. Lee injects a harmonious chime that blends in perfectly as Crys Wall’s voice silhouettes the track. A beat change halfway through gives Freeway a grand opportunity to go off on the track. But the album isn’t full of moments like that. “Bangin’ Screw,” produced by Russel “Addict” Howard, utilizes a quirky loop that sounds like it was pulled off of Fruity Loops. The drum pattern also does nothing to enhance the song. With the beat on D.O.A., Paul Wall tries his best to make it into something worth listening to, but it’s obviously a skippable track.

But where Paul may lack with subject matter, he makes up for in earnest. On, “Tonight,” featuring Jon B, Wall throws away the hood attire and sets the mood for the ladies on this laid-back R&B/Rap hybrid. With piano keys stroking the G-Spot, the ladies are not disrespected on this track. Insane, ain’t it? But if you think that marriage has made Paul Wall soft, then all you have to do is listen to “That Fire” and “I’m Real, What Are You?” On “That Fire,” Mr. Money tries to see if his flame burns harder than Ms. Trina. They two throw sexual innuendos over another Mr. Lee production. The track reeks of synth-sex and the duo constantly tries to one-up the other making for a very entertaining track. And with “I’m Real, What Are You?” KLC bridges the gap between Harlem and H-Town giving Paul Wall and guest, Juelz Santana, a beat where they can both go off without having to change up their respective styles too much.

All in all, Paul Wall’s second offering of jewels, women and tough talk is oft-times repetitive, but still entertaining. Wall manages to pull a few surprising appearances and even still stands out. Fueled by his two club bangers, the Houston MC has a solid second album that deserves to get money.

Yeah... This is just like i said about paul. He'll go gold this album and his next few albums, he'll just fade away, unless he tightens his flow or switches up his style. He'll always be a good artist though imo

Ok im sick of this sh*t. This is like the third album review ive read where even though the review is positive, the reviewer acknowledges the fact that the rapper has no skills. What are we reviewing then? we are reviewing paul wall. Paul wall is a rapper (or so he claims). He can't rap. None of this is denied. Yet we still have a positive review. How is this possible? what if people in the real world were judged by the same criteria we use to judge contemporary rappers? think of it- "oh he's a great singer, he just can't sing." "he's a great doctor, he just doesn't know anything about medicine." "he's a great lawyer that knows nothing about the law, but he's got gorgeous fake teeth so i'm sure he'll win lots of cases." what planet am i on?

Paul wall is a chilled laid back rapper thats real, well thats what i think. He raps about what went on in his life an thats some real sh*t. But as long as he got them sick beats he should be good for now.
Posted by t gutta
Paul has a great voice and flow. But thats it. His content is way too repetitive and the beats are getting redundant. The album sucks! theres only 2 songs on it thats worth a listen. Your time is almost up texas!
Posted by quE
by the way... Your reviews are very misleading to people. You guys used to be tougher on albums.
Posted by quE
Paul wall is good all around but he gotta have raw beats and screwed/chopped disc for me to buy his cd. This cd was lacking in both departments
Posted by Kalifornia
That said, his last album was raw as F*ck

Paul wall has what most, if not all that posted don't have, money and style.. That's what people buy.. They pay for style because they have none of their own, and if you had a style as inticing as his, you might get signed, sell a mill, and become a house hold name.. Like it or not, rock or pop, he's got knots big enough to pursuade cops.. Ya'll keep hatin', the system made you that way and you don't even realize it.. Wake up to what's goin on around you.. Rap is just a hustle.. That's it.. Seperate from hiphop, because hiphop didn't make money.. Rap came and took the sh!t by storm.. Tony montana and the rest of the white italians that set an image in scarface.. That is rap music.. Don't get it twisted..

Bangin' screw is awesome

I just reviewed some of paul wall's postings. Does the term "total moron" still have meaning? his "metaphores" are designed for a 1st grader? considering that his intelligence level is that of a pre-schooler, i'm impressed that he's been able to rise to that level. Well, if the rapper things plays itself out, he can always fall back on his spelling skills. Who knows, maybe he'll be the first rapper to edit "the new yorker."

This album is fun- he is just having fun - not trying to get anyone down like some of these rappers who are too depressed sounding. True its not complicated - but the simplicity of it is hypnotic. Wait till watts comes out wit the screweed and chopped version of this album- it is gonna be awesome.

i know its over but cham molested paul anddike i mean mike im sorry career ,but i didnt expect a lyrical masterpiece ya dig

New albumn is off the chain, keep it up

You can flow
Posted by DJ OK
His album sounds like he wrote the lyrics the night before. The metaphors are wack and he really needs to switch things up more. He repeats himself in every song. I loved the people's champ, so i was extremely disapointed with this album. I was expecting something way better than this. He is a talented rapper with a ridiculous flow (like when he rapped with papoose or juelz) it seems like hes a totally different rapper in this album. Overall if hes going to keep making albums like this, he def needs to retire.

Neva eva hate on tha lonestar state... Paul wall jus holdin it down.
Posted by Druh
Keeping it real for the lonestar state. Nothing wrong with holdin it down, handlin up, and keepin it real. From far west tx.(hub city) all the way to h-town, still tippin. P walls get money stay true represents what the dirty south is all about...stay drill.
Posted by murrman
Man this album waz alright i only like couple of songs hopefully yo next album is better than this one
Posted by weedman
Overall i like the album even though i do think some of it is too commercial. What im tired of is people who arent from a region or even experience the culture in that area try to say somethin sucks etc. Paul isnt jay, big, nas, kweli, etc all of which i love to listenin to. Each artist brings somethin different to the table. If you dont know what htown is like then i can understand why u dont like paul wall or ugk or face etc. But dont tell us our time is almost up. Ugk, scarface, esg etc have been in the game since 1990 or so. That said, some of these people say paul wall suck even though his similies and metaphors are ten times better than rappers who really suck alot of times i.e jim jones, juelz santanna, mobb deep, etc. Try to critic somebody constructively and stopped hatin for no reason. If u dont like say u dont like and ur reason and move on.

This is what happens when fellow texan george w bush cuts education funding. Paul wall speaks like a semi-literate hillbilly third grader. Hooked on phoenics defiantly didn't work for this guy. Someone needs to send "get money, stay true" to george w. Bush so he can see the effectives that an under funded public education system has on on young people.

Okay.. Seriously guys, he can rap. He's got crazy flow, a ridiculous amount of variety in his "metaphors," and if he's not the deepest or most varied rapper in his source material, he does his thing, and he does it well. This album isn't as good as "the people's champ" but it does it's job. It's got plenty of entertaining tracks (i'm real, what are you), (bangin' screw), (on the grind), and (i'm throwed) and even though none of them match up to the hypnotic irresistibility of "sittin' sidewayz," it's definitely a hard hitter from this texas rapper. And it's time for a change anyway; too many of these damn rappers are too depressing with their songs (like young buck's "buck the world" (even though it's a terrific album)), and it seems like mr. Wall's just having fun. I personally love it. -chris fussman

Ok right now F*ck all you Bia'ches hatin on this album ...this n*gga is a hard ass rapper and thats why hes famous ...songs like bangin screw, im throwed, break em off and how gangstas roll are what make him famous they are hard ass t3x45 beats with killa lyrics...thas why i say n*gga welcome to texas Bia'ch !! we the hard mutha F*ckas
Posted by Lord Hemp
Review is whack.......bangin' screw is likely the most bangin beat on the album. It's a southern anthem and in no way "skippable". Then they say snoop stole the song w/ his verse. First off its one of the weakest verses ever, for snoop or anybody else, 2nd, they f*d the lyrics up. "you should learn to mingle" should be "you should learn the lingo"
