Common - Finding Forever

Common-Finding Forever

Preview/Download MP3

Few have a discography that rivals Lonnie Lynn’s (Common). Given his incessant consistency, sheer ingenuity, unfathomable depth and sharp lyricism, you have to mention Common’s name when you’re having the discussion of who’s the greatest emcee of all time. His status was further solidified by his sixth album, Be, that was hailed by many as a classic. Coming off of critical and commercial success Common intends to etch his name in history books eternally with his seventh lp, Finding Forever

It’s hard to not get excited about the possibility of a classic based upon Common’s lead singles, “The People” and “The Game” but the true tale of the album is botched attempts like upcoming single “Drivin’ Me Wild” featuring UK pop sensation, Lily Allen. Kanye West adeptly handles the production with a Rotary Connection sample, repetitive key strokes, and a familiar drum pattern but, lyrically, Common slips up with lackadaisical lines like:

she was the type to watch Oprah and the Today Show/be on the treadmill [uh] like okay, go/had a body, had a body that you can’t pay for/that means she has D’s on her but they wasn’t fake though” and “[he] wanted to be Mike but he was never live in sports/since golf was in, he was on the driving course/to live the rap life, is was what he was striving for/spending cash at the bar to get credit/drinking Chandon just because Big said it/they say Ye is, but dude is big-headed/rock a fur in the summer…so somebody would pet it.”

The track is seemingly about trying too hard to be something you’re not but comes off as vague, unfocused and unclear as Com concludes with the sweeping statement of “love is not a mystery/it’s everything.” In substitute of compellingly threading the three verses together, he instead settles on capping it off with a broad all encompassing statement—a weakness Common has displayed before. “Break My Heart” is another lyrically unfulfilling track that overly simplifies and comes off as complacent effort by a usually lyric-driven, Common. He lead his first verse off with “it was a dream day/met her on Spring Break/look like the type that be like no habla ingles/she said you look like you rap, where’s your bling-ay/and your clothes are tight but you don’t seem gay/I said naw that’s dude from N-Sync-ay/she wasn’t married, kept a ring on her pink-ay/she said you know I don’t be dating rappers/I said I got my Sag card, baby I’m an actor” (hook commences). On “I Want You,” one of the few tracks that is not produced by Ye, (prod. by Will.I.am) we find Common ruminating on lost love but never really going beyond the surface tying together strings of trite clichés and nuances and an uncommon (no pun intended) pop reference to Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn’s break-up.

Finding Forever does illustrate the insightful, introspective Common that garnered his core audience on tracks like “Black Maybe” featuring soul singer, Bilal. On said track, Common dually throws a nod to legend, Stevie Wonder, and explores the difficult topic of people of color coping with obstacles because of their color; not just from other nationalities but also from their own people. He does so accessing a narrative of a gifted athlete who briefly transcended the perils of the street using his athleticism on the basketball court, but is tragically shot down by the same peers who used to have his back to illustrate this paradox. On “Misunderstood,” Com brings the poignant pen game rhyming passionately with unabridged and unabashed truth about people doing what they have to do to survive in the ghetto. The album concludes on an emotive note with this final verse:

ashes and snow falls/I wonder when the role call/…for Heaven gon’ come/ forever gon’ come/it’s a cold world/I can never go numb/look fear in the eyes/say I’m never gon’ run/sooner then later, I know the cheddar gon’ come/for now I write the world letters to better the young/on tree by jewelry, together we hung/now we let our chains hang and gangbang to maintain/Afghanistan going through the same thang/it’s trickles down at each other we aim…/I shoot for the stars, peace and exclusive cars/through the ride I’ve learned to earn hard/watch gangstas turn God in the midst of war/no matter how much I elevate I kiss the floor/it was in the wind when she said Dilla was gone/it was then when I knew we live forever through song.

Finding Forever falls far from being presented with classic status because of its lyrical shortcomings and because the album never really finds a comfortable groove—half producer, half emcee. Between out of place pop references, lazy and uncharacteristic punchlines and for lack of better words uninspired verses it’s hard to imagine that this is the follow-up to arguable classic, Be. For every touching song that reminds me of why I love listening to Common (“Black Maybe,” “Misunderstood” and “Forever Begins), there’s a track that leaves me dumbfounded asking what happened to the hungry, thoughtful lyricist I used to know (“Break My Heart,” “I Want You” and “Drivin’ Me Wild”). Common’s album towers over most albums that have come out this year which is no surprise to anyone who’s familiar with his work and his ability. But as far as ranking amongst his own work and albums of his progressive peers, Finding Forever, is easily forgettable.

I havent heard anything yet from that album, but the cover is really ugly.

I really need to hear the album, because so far i've read 3 negative reviews on the albums and not a single good one, looks like i have to download first then decide if its worth copping.

If you want to know what a classic be, get finding forever// it has complex lyrics like jay and nas rhyming together// it'll be hot not warm, the storm i'm trying to weather till they day the public see's their favorite rapper was lying for cheddar//

I just heard the album today, and it seems to me a fairly good record. Common is not afraid to push the boundaries of his record unlike other mc's who lack creativity and are scared of indivduality. The best tracks are misunderstood, the game, the people, start the show, southside, forever begins and so far to go. I do agree that some records such as i want you, could have been left out. Everyone expects finding forever to be like be, even though it's far from it. Compared to most albums that have come out this year finding forever is one of the best, alongside pharoahe monch's desire. Common has delivered a good album which contains it's strong points and weaknesses, nevertheless it's worth your money to buy it. Support real hip hop music.

U^^thjat's what's up.....the high expectation from be undid people's iritation w/ electric circus. But finding forever carries the trend......these negative reviews seem to be more from a disappoint of not finding the exact seuql of be w/ the same effect.......not solidly on lackluster lyrics alone

T.i. Vs. T.i.p. Is an "exremely dope" album and finding forever is "forgettable"- i would tend to think not.

Just finished listneing to the album. On a scale of 10 i give it an 8...very thoughtful and creative. I believe he came with a lot of insightful rhymes and messages to the listener. However like most people have said there is about two tracks thats coulda been left out. So in my opinion it falls very short of a "classic" although its one of the best albums out this year. Go out and cop it and im sure you wont be dissapointed.hopefully common brings home a grammy this year. By the way that john burnett needs to stop with these album reviews...this man doesnt know good music when he hears it

I think many will agree when i say that even tho this aint his best, common is still 1 of da realest rapperz alive 2day
Posted by Shady G
I bet this is gon be one of them joints that sinks in real well after a bunch of listens, regardless, i gotta cop it cuz its real ya feel me?
Posted by nocompetition7
Could'nt agree more with the review & thats rare. His lyrics were pretty tame on most the songs. It is easy listening though and not bad just seems he was more focused on film than insightful lyrics to the quality we are use to. Fight----for----us---!!

Yo are trippin this album is dope in every sense stop looking for be part 2 this is a different album and common's mind and lyrical direction is just that in a different for finding forever...not be part 2. This album is dope i love every track on it and i think production wise its great...how can u say t.i. Vs t.i.p. Was dope but finding forever is forgettable..e on now t.i.'s album was super wack and sense u wanna compare past albums its nowhere near as dope as king was and thats the truth. Give common his propz...this album is 100% worth buying & will do just that july 31st!

B real; compared to what's out today, even com's relatively good albums or better than 95% of everybody else great albums (no rims or gold teeth are mentioned). Even jordan had an off nite. Legends are always held to the fire but we give everyone else a pass. Real hip hop any day!!!
Posted by Talented10
Im from tha south and i can tell you right no finding forever is alot more creative than that damn ti album. The only thing creative about t.i. Vs. T.i.p. Is the title. It sounds like king to me, big things poppin is saying the same thing what you know about said. No need for him to address it twice. Also if anybody think this album is sorry ,ya'll dont know hip hop. Finding forever is worth buying especially if you miss old hip hop. Also, release therapy is a great cd

Yall crazy as hell in my book if its not a classic it is damn sure a solid album whoever wrote this review was smoking crack. And i've listened to the album back and forth.

T.i vs t.i.p - extremely dope. Findin' forever - 'easily' forgetable??? hip hop really is on life support. But then again, when u're as good as common, nas, jay, em, snoop, luda, jada, styles, etc, u're judged by ur own standards. And that where it gets confusin', sometimes ugly. The album's str8 fire. I was lookin' forward to it, and i wasn't disappointed at all. T.i ain't gettin' a penny from me for that wack sh*t he put 2gether. We all complain 'bout the game's current state, so i figured if we start spendin' our hard earned bucks on the good artists, who really work their brains, we could tame this wack-ness in the rap, which is damn to prevailent 2day. Real hip hop 4eva! 1 love

I seriously don't understand what is going on in hiphop. A classic is classic, something immortal. Where are we going at, if we just go out and expect every record made by a modern day genius to be a classic. But the worst thing is that everybody has this either classic or bullsh*t mentality. "my unrealistic expectations aren't fulfilled therefore i hate this album!"(how are they treating nas?) i'm happy to own another great record. Common is maybe my favourite mc these days, i hope he will someday come to germany and i can see him. Everybody who says this album is forgetable is disrespecting common, all that he has done and will do and my understanding of hiphop!

This sh*t is getting on my nerves, commons cd is on the same freeway as be is just a different lane. We agree that the best to come out so far this year (until lupe and kanye drop), however, it is a classic or damn near it. The segways (the bridge that connects each song to the other) on the album are classic in itself. This album sounds like stevie wonder on hip-hop. The reviewer can give a schizophrenic rapper an a+ but not common? common drops another gem go cop it.
Posted by Rashad
I was a bigger t.i fan till i got both new albums. T.i falls way short from the king, only 3tracks of real worth on that cut. But common's is def a classic in my ears, or damn near close. Listen carefully to 'forever begins' or 'a dream' and you'll know exactly why!
Posted by Dingaling
There should be a mixtape called " we need hip hop back" hosted by rakim with nothing but common on it lol. Because lately on the lyrical side he and his good music/ hip hop since 1972 crew are the only ones bringing the fire! lupe killed artscape in baltimore city last weekend common is a beast and kayne is kanye........
Posted by purnoble3
Oh my god these comment suck ...real music lovers will love this cd..misunderstood .people and the rest of the album is hot props props thanks common for bring out these samples from nina simone this is the rawest hiphop release in a while omggggggggggggggg. This album sounds so fresh like new air in the lungs. Thank you commmon and kanye!!! wish my comments was the first to see on review

i just downloaded the cd and i am still going to buy itmon is basically doing his thing.one or two tracks is filler.but everything else is fire
Posted by peedub
This is really cool i av listened to one or two tracks and there cool this is the F*ck*ng sh*t av been talking about well it is cool
Posted by debo
Every common release had shown signs of an artist progressing. This album is now different. A true must for real hip-hop fans.
Posted by buckeyewu
If you are a true hip hop fan and you respect and apreciate mc's like common you will want to buy 2 copies of the album because it's a very good album, it's excellent. I will admitt there are one or two songs that are fillers but, you need those tracks to make others stand out. Also, you have to understand that there was a time when common didnt always have the best production like he has now. Back then most of the time you had to only depend on his lyrics to get you through a songs or album wheen he had tracks with lackluster production. So know that he has a great soulful producer in kanye (which replaces if not exceeds j dilla) and his lyrics are still raw he will continues to make great albums as long as that equation stays the same thus finding forever....... Oh and his lyrics are not uninspiring on this album they are still raw

First off all, what's a "classic" since people use this word to describe hip hop albums so often now. First define that. Then, tell me is an artist required to make a "classic" when he puts out an album? i thought real "classics" releases were few and far between.
Posted by Thought2Reality
Go buy this album. The review doesn't give this album justic. True story: i climbed mt. Fuji this past weekend, and i was listening to 'finding forever' as i approached the top. The song is beautifl and it solidified the moment for me. All of the songs are great, and common has another classic. Real hip hop.

Love the album, love the cover - reviews seem to fall into two camps - com and ye rehashed "be" and failed to come up with the goods, or com and ye stuck to the "be" formula and elevated it - i'm definitely in the second camp - to me "finding forever" is a definite improvement on "be" due to stronger standout tracks (the people, the game, drivin me wild) - i didn't really think com's lyrics were as bad/lazy as some make out, especially when you consider other current major hip-hop releases - think it will be come to be considered a future classic...

Common been in the rap game for along time and he's been making hit after hit and classic after classic.
Posted by all day3280
His last album be was a classic and finding forever is another classic. The whole album is crazy. Go out and support common.
Posted by all day3280
Dont listen to the negative reviews. I have this album and its already a classic. Its a definent go and get. This is a album you can put in and just let play all the way through. 10 out of 10 stars and i think definently album of the year.
Posted by rapkid
I disagree with the negative reviews. I absolutely love "finding forever!" common speaks the truth about relationships, today's society and more. The beats are wonderfully melodic and hard when necessary. This is real hip hop music and i'm proud of common's work!
Posted by captivatingchi
Glad to see this getting some props from a lot of fans. The critics have it wrong, this album is probably at least an 8.5/10. 9.9/10 if you compare this album to album's by other rappers. A couple of filler tracks, other than that this is probably just as good as be, and the lyrics really aren't that bad. Pretty good i think.

Overated trash

From the first minute of this cd to the last. It is a classic
Posted by Kevin
Finding forever is yet another classic by common. His sharp lyricism is still present, he might have just a few small lapses, but surpasses anyone putting anything out right now. He is only rivaled by kanye in this day and age.
Posted by bboybritannic
Bankhead ur a waste of sperm....i think i speak 4 everybody when say i wish ur pops woulda strapped up...u prolly think hustlenomics is gonna b a classic....but den again u a lame so i cant knock u or ur thought process
Posted by DUMBASS
His line about the treadmill refers to the pop/punk band ok go and their music video that featured several treadmills going at once as the band members jumped from one to another. So i'd say it's not as weak of a line as you make it out to be.

Finding forever is a truly beautiful album. Those who do not like it either have not heard it or have heard bad things from somebody else and are claiming to not like it. If you do not understand his music it does not mean it is bad it just simply means you don't understand it. I love his work and his album from the top to the bottom is one of the best i have heard all summer. Common is real hip-hop.

The problem about the album is it is kind of boring. J-dilla light is not a good sound for kanye, judging that dilla wasn't nearly as great as death makes him to be. Also you have the fact that common may be lyrical but i have a hard time listening to him without getting bored. Also, i'm sick of some backpack fags claiming this is the "real" hip hop. Real hip hop is a figment of the listeners imagination and personally i prefer east coast hardcore rappers and dudes with a sense of humor to this sh*t.

This album is a well rounded classik with somethin 4 a-body, i phuks with it n track 10 is da sh*t...obviously the writer to this review doesnt know much about ladies

6 out of 10

Yo, i don't know about yall but that "i want you" is actually pretty tight, but the whole album is def worth it if you a common fan. If you appreciate good music, cop it. If not, then keep pumping your chingy & lil bow wow ish.

I have mad luv for common. I think common is the truth, he speaks the truth about black people and wuts goin on in the world today, things that us senseless peple need to look and listen to. You can take it or leave it, thats my opinion. Common is real hip-hop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Aurianna
I cant even front i was expecting more from common his album is hot but i felt he should of put more time into perfecting it real talk
Posted by F.A.M.E
I found it to be a pretty good album so far, although i've only got through the first 7 tracks. I was looking forward to anything coming out after "be," which i felt was classic. Kanye could've made another appearance - and common is missing from his album altogether ... I'm a huge fan of that combination though. Kweli + pharoahe + common = a good few months for hip hop.
Posted by Ryan
This is an amazing album.

This dude that is reviewing this album is obviously retarded.."i want you" is a great song. This is a great album despite what this retard says..go purchase and you will not be disapointed.

Didnt tis ni**az buy all of his own cds what a joke.. But yall fools aint nuttin to soulja boy the new king of the south
Posted by Souljaboy
This is a classic album from start to finish. Common has evolved as an mc is truly gifted. Lyrically, he speaks to the masses. The cover is ugly as sh*t, but the beats are 9 out of 10, the lyrics are 9 out of 10 and the overall consistency and creativity is 10 out of 10. If you don't like something on this album, you should grow a brain and try studying the essence of hip-hop and creativity. Album is a 9 out of 10...i was pleasantly surprised
Posted by Zahirah
I think it's an excellent album, i was reading the rolling stone review today and i find it an absolute travesty that finding forever received the same grade as 50 cent's and chamillionares new discs. When it comes to hip hop album reviews it seems like critics will just never understand what real hip hop is all about. F*ck the critics, recognize the people.
Posted by alistair
This is a great album. The tracks are off the hook. I like those kinda lyrics and i also likr the beats. Keep on doin your thing
