Little Brother–GetBack

Preview/Download MP3

I won’t front on you, I am a little afraid to listen to the new Little Brother LP “GetBack”. I some-how or another kept myself from listening to any post- 9th Wonder split music other than the last mixtape they dropped out of fear. The fear that it won’t measure up to the magnificent classic “The Minstrel Show”. Afraid that it wouldn’t have the free will of “The Listening”. At sometime men must face their fears and the only feeling I have now is that L.B. may be better off with more variety on the boards.

The album starts off with a smooth piano playing in the background which is interrupted by Tay realizing it’s time to get it popping. The newly freed duo unleashes over “Sirens”, the funky beat lays the foundation as Phonte and Pooh address the real issues that’s being masked because of Imus-gate. It’s obviously Big Pooh has stepped his MC game up as he spits “back independent cause the kids/ I wouldn’t cater/ go against the system/ your in bed with Al Qaeda”. Yet, it’s Phonte that steals the show as usual with lines like “...they tryin’ to blame this rap shit on all of our ills/ like I can stick you up with a mike/ like I can rape you with a verse or use a verb as a knife/... like you wasn’t callin’ black women hoes before/ rappers delight”.

On “Can’t Win For Loosing” Phonte details how originally he wanted to spit for the people yet people didn’t hold them down, so he decided to do it for himself. I am particularly impressed with Big Pooh verse as he takes subtle shots at Atlantic Records with “ now we on the brink of success/ niggas gettin’ praised in the press/ niggas gettin’ backed by Quest/ LB is the new conquest/...ink with a major/ watch how they freak it/ gotta show the people we can keep it, tight/ deep down know somethin’ wasn’t right/ gotta keep pushin’ despite/ but then everybody changed overnight/ when them numbers came back light/ now we outta mind, outta sight”. The Dirty Dozen’s very own Deshaun Porter cooks up that crack on “ExtraHard”, the sample is ridiculous and almost reminds you of 9th. The swag game on the duo is in full effect as they trade verses back in forth.

Vintage LB shines on when you listen to “Dreams”, the track draws you in as Big Pooh paints the picture of him chasing dreams no matter what. Your head just keeps nodding as Phonte responds to people who felt he was ashamed of them with The Minstrel Show “I spent many a sleepless night/ because of it/ until I had to shake that shit off, and reach the conclusion/ that every now and again, you gotta ask yourself/ do you really wanna win or just look good loosing?”, the track is definitely a inferno. And 9th wonder reunites with the gang on “Breakin’ My Heart” featuring what could be viewed by some as an odd paring with Lil Wayne dropping a verse. I really wish I could say that this is the best song on the album mostly because the duo became a trio again but... it was kind of disappointing. Only because of the fact you’d expect so much more being that it’s the only 9th Wonder collaboration, but still its a good track.

The GetBack is a genuine sizzling follow up to the critically acclaim The Minstrel Show. The various productions give it a more diverse sound, rather than the signature we have come accustom to. From Hi-Tek’s “Step It Up” to the classic of “After The Party” and “Good Clothes” the album is a soulful explosion with dope lyrics to boast. The only peeve (if that) I may have is the skits throwing you off on damn near every song. Yet still that is a very minor thing. If you’re a true LB fan, Phonte and Pooh with out question do not disappoint. If you’re just into real fresh Hip-Hop, get your ass to the store and cop because it’s justly worth it. Change though sometimes drastic isn’t always a bad thing, and that is really evident with Little Brother’s latest opus.

This is another reason why hiphop is not dead, i just finished listening to the album, and this is quality music. Little brother should get the shine they deserve. Better than half the crap these dj's be playing on the radio. This album is one of the year's best. It should be nominated for a grammy, along with talib kweli's eardrum, common's finding forever, kanye's graduation, chamillionaire's ultimate victory, and pharoahe monch's desire. It's music like this that inspires me to be an true mc.

I have been waiting for this album all year. I heard good clothes on their and have been eagerly awaiting the rest to drop. I think lb are one of the hottest groups in the game but they get 0 props from the masses!!? why? it drives me insane. This is real hip hop the stuff that we are all trying to hold onto.

Lil' brother is the essence of what true hip hop is about. That's not to say that i don't think, for example, "soldja boy", isn't hip-hop, either. He's inspriational. However, phonte and pooh possess the artistic creativity of true rythmic story telling, word trickery and delivery, which is what hip hop is truly about. I'm an 80's kid who was born in the 70's and i've seen the evolution of hip hop in its entirety, and it has indeed been an amazing transformation, some good and some bad. However, w/i this transformation lil' brother has managed to hold on to the true essentials of hip-hop music and that's truly impressive. So, i big up them for that.

This album is straight up pure good music. One of the best albums of this year. The variety of production and the consistent lyricism and content of lb coincide to create an incredible album. You need this album in your life. And the track dreams.... Wow, i'll jus leave it at that.

Why is everyone afraid because 9th left? if it's about true mc's why does it matter? lyrics, not beats make classic albums. By the way, when did minstrel show become a classic? what about separate but equal?

Cop this album, and listen closely to the lyrics, word for word, these brothas paint pictures that are simple truths but always overlooked by the common man. You can tell 9th' influence is missing here, but the change is good. That solja boy comment is whats wrong with hh nowadays. Cats only want sh*t one way, why cant we have our cake and eat it too bra, why cant i listen to lil' wayne and mass influence? stop hatin' on lb.. I' sure tay and pooh listen to solja boy. See so called underground cats listen to radio friendly cats, but its hardly the otherway around. But cats like pooh and tay like it like that, you know the saying "you don't see us, but we see you.." ignorance is bliss ha bra!

Little brother's album is full of dope beats, tight rhymes, i mean, what more do ya'll want? soja boy is fun pop teenager music and all, ( my little sista does the dance well) but this is grown folk music, hip hop in its purest form, that is.

It's funny to read the comments and see the great comment which make sense, and then the spammers trying to sell their albums. I havent heard the new jay but i hope he can come up with the same fire that my bouy fon tiggah spit.. One love

"a lil cup a that oil never hurt nobody, 4 cups later, life of the party" very strong, through and through. Love the jozeemo cameo

9th made lb great, now they're just good. Lyrically, phonte is still superb, and pooh b steps it up a notch, but they just ain't the same w/out 9th. I think khrysis and nicolay should have done way more production on this album, all of it in my opinion. Illmind, although a great dude, just don't do it for me w/ his beats, especially producing for lb.

I smell gimmiks... Why do yall low life buy this crappy music .. Yall need to buy that soulja boy real hip-hop
Posted by souljaboy
Dope beats and dope rhymes! what more can you ask for? little brother deserves respect hands down!

Soulja...shut yo dumb ass up, and it's "gimmicks". Funny how you misspelled that 'cause the garbage you're promoting is a gimmick. Please let the grown folks who know good music speak. Anyways, please buy "getback". I'm thoroughly satisified! true classic! keep real hip-hop alive my nc bruthas!!!

Great cd... Will have a blast for the upcoming concert at brickhouse theatre in phoenix. Glad you guys are making it big. It's to bad that 9th isn't with little brother no more. I know you are still fam. Big pooh and phonte still do great no matter what. Cant wait til the november 15th. Keeping it real. (dedra)

Have to say that there are native americans that listen to lb and 9th other justus league. My brother introduced me to this and i was hooked ever since. Prior his friend introduced him since. Yeah there are a lot of haters but i give them props all the way. Yeah i dont like all that commercial sh**t on the radio.
Posted by little hopi
Indeed, this is true butta. I gotta say that because ever since i heard lb bump on xm in 05, i was floored. I bumped it (the minstrel show) and was hooked by those vocals. Both pooh and tay shine on their respective verses. I stopped listening to the radio looong ago. 9th is serious! when i heard the new joints...i was like "okay". I thought i'd give it a listen. Yo, i wasn't disappointed. This is stepping your game up! if you got some bread, put it into your system. Eq that thing and move to some lb. Other cats got sounds...but lyrics to listen to...i think not! not to be on nobody's jock...just have em on your playlist! that's real!!!!!
