Preview/Download MP3 No matter how much hard work he has put into the industry some people still can’t spell his name right [laughs]. The good thing about this is that the name Statik Selektah shows originality and creativity, something the game lacks greatly today . Repping the Beantown Boston, Ma DJ Statik Selektah’s knowledge of hip-hop makes him a respected DJ in the industry. If you followed his best mixtapes such as “The Look of Love” hosted by Q-Tip, “The Prophecy 2” Ft. Nas, and “The Bar Exam” with Royce Da 5’9 it shows Statik has a rep in the industry and respect from some of the games illest MC’s. Today the mixtape game lacks originality and not too many DJ’s can put together an ill mixtape with the hottest concepts, blends, and dope music like Statik Selektah. They say in life you give credit when it is due and Statik gets my respect to the fullest for the hip-hop he put on the new album “Spell My Name Right” The Album.
When you put out an album a good intro is a good way to kick things off letting listeners know what to expect. Always getting down with his man Termanology this was a good move for Statik to have Term start things off. The lyricism of Termanology is some of the best you can hear these days and from what he said on the intro it shows he appreciates the early veterans before him. Not only that but the way he mentioned everybody who appeared on the album just made it even better. Styles P of the Lox gets it in “Stop, Look, and Listen” with Termanology and the legendary Q-Tip. This track is the best hip-hop you can hear with the hunger in Styles P’s voice, the lyricism in Termanology, and Q-Tip finishing it off taking it back Tribe Called Quest style like they did in the 90’s. Slum Village and Granite State gives you some good hip-hop with a laid back vibe on “Got Me Goin”. It has a 70ish music feel to it that can just make you kick back and relax.
What makes a good DJ at the end of the day is the song selection. Statik Selektah choice of songs on this well put together album gives him the “Hot” DJ status. “Back Against The Wall” is a super Midwest and east coast banger with the ill wordplay of Royce Da 5’9 and Cormega, Termanology and Reks get it crackin like a raw dynamic duo on “Hardcore”. The two reflect on struggles in the ghetto and how hip-hop made a difference to them, the last verse though is the climax of the song where the two go back to back. If you are a big fan of AZ you will love “No Holding Back” as he gets down with fellow east coast street legend Cormega. The chorus is so smooth and it can easily take you back to the era of the early to mid 90’s when hip-hop was all about them dope lyrics. Philly comes together for some brotherly love on “What Would You Do”. Known in the past to have engaged in a lyrical battle that many still talk about today Freeway and Cassidy bonded strong on this one. The cut was just crazy and when Cassidy came on you love it even more, especially hearing stuff from him like “I make classic masterpieces and my chain flash like stained glass smashed to pieces”. That is some heat right there and then Cass continues “The strong gonna always outlast the weakest and on your way to success everyday is a test”.
A hot street anthem comes in the album with “G Shit” ft. Uncle Murda, Sev-One, Jadakiss, and Termanology. The four MC’ go hard on this something they do best and it was good to hear from Jadakiss known for the quick punchlines showing he hasn’t lost his touch. If you are looking for lyricism, good beats, and variety of MC’s to listen to “Spell My Name Right” The Album is something you need to hear. If you are a fan of hip-hop and love lyrics I guarantee you will love this album. Hopefully next time you ask for the next Statik Selektah project you can remember to spell his name right.
