MTV’s Video Music Awards & Hip-Hop: WHEN WILL THEY LEARN?

Article by: Kye Stephenson

Kanye West awardsIf you watched MTV’s Video Music Awards last week and really paid attention, you’d notice that once again they have revealed just how in tune they really are when it comes to hip-hop.

What absurd transgression have they committed this time you say? The old split trick. Didn’t you notice that there were two separate categories—one for Best Rap Video , the other for Best Hip-Hop video .

Yep, another award show has shown their true colors and failed to realize that they are both one in the same. Of course, any hip-hopper worth his white-on-white nikes knows that hip-hop is a culture, rap is something born out of that culture presented in musical form.

So why did Jay-Z , D12 and 50 Cent get nominated in the Rap category, and Kanye West, Nelly and Chingy get nominated in the Hip-Hop category? Same thing, right? What?

Just cause Chingy ain’t as “hard” as 50 Cent he’s not rap? Just cause Jay-Z has 99 problems and Nelly is only shaking his tailfeather he’s gotta be different? If they deemed a song too “pop” for a rap video then put it under Best Pop Video.

Don’t disrespect the culture and try and shape hip-hop into something that will meet your own corporate demands. Nice job, MTV. Next year get it right.

Yall know mtv is not for us! we barely have a spot on the show. So to think they going to get category right your wrong. We must summit to our bet, who barely making it cutt. But this is the story our struggle.

F*ck mtv! it should be demanded that they get the categories right by the hip-hop elites and so forth! they should not be allowed to mold a culture that serves as a voice for a community that is alien to them! and just because they give jobs to a hand full of out of touch blacks, doesn't give them the right to think they can do so!!!! but much of this is our own fault, by not creating and giving value to our own award shows. There's this sense that the mtv awards is worth more than the source or b.e.t awards! why? a panel of old school, or periodical appointed positions of rappers today, should be put together so hip-hop can be put into its proper formate & context! F*ck mtv!!

Mtv and companies like them are useful because they bring hip hop to the mainstream. Getting more people into the culture, allowing hip hop to grow. I myself would not be into hip hop if it was not for mtv constantly playing the real slim shady.
