An Intelligent Response

Article by: Wise Intelligent

In Response To: Who The Hell Am I? Has Jay-Z Outgrown Hip-Hop?

Wise IntelligentThis is a very well written, informative, and at the same time, inquisitive article. It reached its goal in provoking the thoughts of its reader, while at the same time inducing the reader with the opinion of the author. The less-observant reader will no doubt be persuaded to think that Hip Hop does not want to see the end result of the struggle (represented by Jay-Z, to the writer), and desires more so to continue in an infinite cycle of purposeless "ballin", "hustlin", and "coming-up!" However, this is where this journalist and I disagree.

Its not that Hip Hop does not want to see anyone fulfill their "dreams," its actually the fact that Hip Hop in its origin, at its root, deeply imbedded in its subconscious lies the precepts of its "original doctrine" which is "ACTIVISM." Hip Hop, like the BPP, CIBI, OAAU, etc., began as a "movement" to empower poor ghetto youth in America and eventually the world, with the result being defined here as the "upward mobility" of the "masses" and not the "individual" alone. So the writer is correct when he says that " What Jay-Z has become is a dream materialized." But, the "dream" of Hip Hop was to see the "community" in a better place and not just one "nigga." What Jay-Z has achieved is nothing more than the "American-Dream", defined here as "the accumulation of personal wealth solely for the upward mobilization of the individual ." This "Amerikkkan Dream" has been achieved by many of "niggas" before Hip Hop was born. The problem has always been that most of our examples of a "nigga" who "made-it" represented "niggas" who failed to be continuously "ACTIVE" in the struggle of the masses of the people from which they came.

Black youth in America, at the time of Hip Hop's birth had long since abandoned the futility of the American "Dream" because they had seen so many brothers and sisters "make-it" and, yes, for them, the "struggle stopped!" And this my friends is the reason for the "dis-connect" with Jay-Z, Bill Cosby, Bob Johnson, Oprah Winfrey, and all the other "niggas" who represent the Amerikkkan "dream materialized." Their is NO active presents of any of these "niggas" in the struggle still confronting the "black-communities" from which they came. So, yes "Jay-Z has more money than you (or he) has ever thought of and can now do things that were out of Hip-Hop’s collective reach. " And so does all the other "niggas" on the long list of "niggas" who "made-it!" But, what do they do? They become spokesmen for shit like "anti-Semitism?" I mean, not one of these niggas have ever put their image and likeness at the front of any real campaign to save the black youth of America (who need them more now than ever), the large majority of whom it is a well documented fact; will not see any parts of the "Amerikkkan Dream!" And this is why a line has been, and rightfully so, drawn between what is Hip Hop and what is rap. With all this wealth and financial knowledge at his disposal, it seems like the only thing the "Jigga-man" has ACTIVE-ly done for the "black-community" with his money is brag, boast, and stunt in the face of 30 million black youth who literally don't have shit. In the same lyrics quoted by this journalist, Jay-Z also speaks constantly of how he can take the next mans girl and "ball-her-out!" Nigga please, I know you can take my girl to Paris? I work an "honest" 9 to 5, I don't sell crack, I'm not a rapper, I like Hip Hop, I'm a fan of Jay-Z, but, must I be beaten over the head with the fact that you're rich and I'm not?

In conclusion, I know that this manifest will be given the infamous "player-hater" status. I know that many will quote bullshit slogans like "I can't save the world" or "I don't know the secret to success, but the secret to failure is trying to please everyone." But, lets imagine for a minute if Harriet Tubman would have adopted this same selfish position, and after she "made-it" to freedom, or after "achieving" that freedom and realizing her "dream" of being a free-woman, said "I can't save the world" or "I don't know the way to freedom, but the secret to slavery is trying to free others" and went shopping in Paris? Well, she didn't and she knew that she could not "save the world" but believed deeply that she could "save the BLACK WORLD" so she ACTIVELY got involved and organized the "Underground Railroad!" She is the "Poster-Child" for a "sister" who "made-it" to freedom, became the "realization of a dream" but understood that the "dream" was not fulfilled unless it was shared by the "masses." Proper Education Always Counters Exploitation....

The thing with jay-z is, people love the underdog. But once you make it, bragging about your money & cribs is sorta ... Arrogant. Especially when a lot of your fans are struggling to make month's rent ... "kingdom come" is cool though, but jay, tone down on the "i'm rich & you're not." you're beating a dead horse. ... Im glad u spoke up on this. I agree with most of what u said. These black people who have "made it" should never turn their back on where they came from. But in all your criticism, you failed to give an example of how these people can ligitimately "save the black world". What can people like oprah, who use their position to educate people already and donates millions to charitys and has schools and youth centers, do??? i agree that they should definately do more, but what exactly do u suggest that the jay-z's, oprah's, diddy's, bill cosby's and bob johnson's do to save their people???

This person is definitely on point and i share a lot of the same thoughts. Ultimately the attitude he is addressing is what is "killing" art in america. From music to movies to fashion etc. The greed is killing creativity. I urge everybody to read a book by osho titled creativity. 1

The real fight is the fight with oneself. "if you defeat the enemy on the outside the victory is momentary, if you defeat the ememy on the inside the victory is eternal" so the real thing to teach the youth is that they are being programmed to lust after this life that does not exist for 95% of us. Mtv, bet, flavor of F*ck*ng love give me a break man. Each one teach one, it's time to stand up, and stand together, before there is not anyone left to stand up for us. We are at motherF*ck*ng war, everyday of our lives, the real question is what color do you rep red black and green, or red white and blue

Well, i agree with wise half-way.. The problem we have in the black communitties is real deep. I don't think jay-z he compeletly out of touch with the black community. I agree with black mamba comment. We always bring all this problems with no type of solution, maybe jay-z did out grow hip-hop? maybe he didn't. We have to ask yourself where we stand as a nation. We can diss jay-z all day. But we don't support one another.how much do u want from someone. Everybody too busy keeping it "hood" or real. Wise really need to analyzed this is beyond jay-z,oprah,bob johnson. Etc. We need to stand for ourself as a nation. Black people don't support one another period. It's a disease.

Wise understands this is beyond oprah, bob johnson and jay-z, but is alluding to the reality that their "materialized dreams," are used to re-inforce the schizophrenic backbone of american identity: for one to pull themsleves up by the boot straps, work hard, dont go against the grain and it all pays off in the end. The problem with the rampant teaching of such an idea in homes, church, school and work, is that the material and structural postion of were most social majorities (thats the working class and poor people) make a living or try to survive denies them resources to suceed violently or coercively. White america uses people like jigga, oprah and bob to legitimate to themselves and the "nation" that people who dont want nothing dont get nothing, while those who strive do. Not to add because many of the those whos dreams do materialize dont have a strong historical, spiritual and political sense of self, they do not know how or what to do to work with communiites in struggle. Oprah for instance panders pseudo liberal and semi-conservative ideas to white middle class women and exoticizes africa consistantly. They dont need to give money to charities or go on mtv for glorified sympathy campaigns to help communites in need of water for the united nations. Shit the united nations is one of the main reasons their is a water problem in second and third world counties. Their are collectives and organizations already in existence that actively do work to empower youth, work with prisoners, work in

For me i think jay only had reasonable doubt and after that his sh*t was either average or wack. I agree with most of yall about him coming of as arrogant he needs to make some deep hip hop its not all about your money and the amount of cars you have. Never been his biggest fan but i like r.d that is a classic. I also think jay needs to mature i mean he is an elderstates man of hip hop and he is making crap tracksl like show me what you got. Needs to mature and guide these half assed youngsters that are coming into hip hop nowadays

I couldn't have said it better myself wize. Me and my people miss cats like you and the prt in this meaningless rap game. I talk to alot of the younger guys that i know around my hood aspiring to be tomorrows next big thing to dare to be different and put the positive messages and images hip-hop once had back into the music. Although times have changed, us as black people and the creators of this hip-hop movement have been walking backwards for the last fifteen years because of "media conditioning". I'm for the people, not for self because i love my people, and if we don't give a sh*t about us who will? keep it 100 wize. Much respect for the article. Life.
