NBS: What would be some words that you would want to leave with the people?
Chris Robinson: To me the biggest thing if you want to get in this game there are no rules at all. You know, if you got a hookup...use it. Filmmaking is almost like as directors we are almost like rappers, we have the access granted, the making of the videos, so people look at this and go man they livin it up, and doing it big and whateveran of course you get rewards for your hard work... First of all love this. If you really love this, then you do it.
But if you want to get in, shoot your homeboys video. Theres digital video and Final Cut Pro, stuff that I did not have when I was younger cuz I had to go to a studio to do everything. so, you have the power to shoot a movie in your hands, the power to shoot a video in your hands. Theres so many different ways to get in. You can got he traditional route, or you can go your own way. I went my own way.
My schooling is eclectic, because when I first got out of highschool I got a job and just used to mess with the cameras. Then where im from in Maryland. Theres a local community college called Hartford. It happened to be a professor there who was the truth. Thats what its all about. This individual like opened my mind to TV and film theory, to doing practical things with TV and film and me getting into film. So that one year I went there was probably the biggest part of my education that gave me the most foundation. I did my homeboys videos in Houston banging on doors in New York to try to make it happen. I went to school and took some courses got my fundamentals together. And them In jumped out. My homeboys got a record deal in Sweden.
I went to Sweden for six weeks shot three videos and it was a whole different world, So my film education came a little different. And after that came New York City being on the grind and sleeping on floors. So I come from the university of, theres a little bit of formal education which was very important actually to me in the foundation but then the rest of came pretty much from hustlin and just being out there and loving hip-hop alot of people see it and do it a different way. Just get involoved and do your thing and dont wait for nobody cuz you wont get discovered and you wont... nobody is gonna take you under their wing and magically blow you up. It just doesnt happen like that, it could happen, but you know just grind and do your thing.
