Three 6 Mafia - The Most Known Unknown
Interview by: Darian Logan
Without compromising their dark image as a malevolent rap group from the South, Three 6 Mafia quickly evolved from a humble underground rap collective to a commercially successful dynasty by retaining their raw qualities and releasing countless albums under a number of monikers. Representing Memphis, TN, the group's six core members -- Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca, Juicy "J," and DJ Paul -- give the group its dark image, vividly rapping about drug use, violent aggression, pornographic sex, and anything else remotely evil.
After releasing their first official album in 1995 and their first major-label album in 1997, Three 6 Mafia soon found themselves on the verge of becoming a common name in hip-hop. Once When the Smoke Clears debuted at number six on Billboard's album charts in summer 2000, it became evident that Three 6 Mafia no longer were an underground group. North Memphis’ own Juicy J the CEO of Hypnotize Minds and member of Three 6 Mafia sheds some insight on the new album "The Most Known Unknowns."
Nobodysmiling.com: Why do you think Three 6 Mafia has continues to have commercial success without compromising out image.
Juicy J: Man you know we just put out what people expect from us. You can't pick up a Three 6 Mafia album and say "what the hell are you doing first you was this and now you are this." We the same old dudes.
Nobodysmiling.com: So you think it’s because you stayed the same you retained loyal fans.
Juicy J: Yeah.
Nobodysmiling.com: Do you think that if you made more radio friendly music that you would be more successful?
Juicy J: We just think it was the timing. Stay Black came out and it was just the timing and 'Tear the Club up' was one of those songs that everyone was just on the same page as us.
Nobodysmiling.com: What is the meaning of the new album, "The Most Known Unknown"?
Juicy J: Well the hits we done like 'Tear the Club up,' 'Sippin on Sizzup' are the most known and people known those hits and they don’t know the artists. You know the song you just don’t know the artists, its like we go to shows and people are like "I didn’t know you sang that song, man I love that song" It’s like we are the most known unknowns.
Nobodysmiling.com: What’s your favorite song on the new album and why?
Juicy J: Stay fly, because a lot of the records, I hear the music so damn much by the time it’s mastered and done I’m already burned out on this song. I play this song over and over and never get tired of it.
Nobodysmiling.com: Stay Fly has Young Buck, Eightball & MJG. Who else did you collaborate with on the new album?
Juicy J: Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Pall Wall, Remy Martin Mr. Biggs, Project Pat and Trick Daddy.
Nobodysmiling.com: What should the fans expect?
Juicy J: Gully Shit. Life situations and real deal shit.
Nobodysmiling.com: Can we expect any new solo projects coming soon from Three 6 Mafia?
Juicy J: Not really, not right now. We got Project Pat and we got a new artist coming out called Chrome.
Nobodysmiling.com: What should the listeners know about Three 6 Mafia that they don’t already know?
Juicy J: We got a new comedy movie called "Clean Up Men" coming out on DVD October 25th. Look out for that.
