Juicy J & Project Pat - Tennessee Titans
Interview By: Kevin L. Clark
Your mouths are wide open and I know why. The shock still hasn’t left your mind, yet. It is hard to understand how a group from Memphis, Tennessee can win the coveted Hollywood prize for a song highlighting the travails of a pimp. But your favorite grill wearing group won the Oscar and since then has been on a media blitzkrieg.
Appearing on an episode of “Flavor of Love,” partying with Hugh Hef, and continuing to produce the hits that have girls dropping their asses to the floor – Three Six Mafia cannot be stopped. Even with the departure of Crunchy Black, Three Six and Project Pat stay trucking onward. The Tennessee Titans, Juicy J and Project Pat, sit down with NobodySmiling.com to talk about how it felt to win the Oscar, what’s in the works with them, and how Juicy J feels about Crunchy Black.
NobodySmiling.com : Congratulations again on the Oscar. How has winning that affected your guy’s career?
Project Pat : Man, I was in California when the awards happened. I was with them and I got a chance to kick it with them afterwards. For us, it was a major come-up. You had Three Six Mafia performing and winning on the Oscars. It’s a wonderful feeling. It is one of the highest awards given out in entertainment and they got it.
Juicy J : It blew us up. We came in and we basically shocked the world. People lightweight expected us to win, but even with ourselves – we were confident in our skills, but we’ve seen people get screwed before who should’ve won.
NobodySmiling.com : So, what did you think walking that red carpet?
Project Pat : They saw those grills and came running.
Juicy J : Yeah. It was a rush. A once in a lifetime experience.
NobodySmiling.com : I think that winning that kind of validated you guys in the eyes of mainstream America, though. Would you agree?
Juicy J : For sure. It gave us our major stamp in the industry. What is that they say – the thing that approves the meat?
NobodySmiling.com : USDA…?
Juicy J : Yeah, man, we got our USDA approval right now. People are really checking out for us and that has got us involved in a lot of new projects and ventures off of that win. Everyone who didn’t know about Three Six, knows about us now and it’s a wonderful feeling. From doing the shows to getting involved in these new projects, it’s all been a rush and an eye opener.
NobodySmiling.com : But did winning the Oscar also lead to Crunchy Black’s leaving of the group?
Juicy J : I really wouldn’t even know. I really never talked to him. We never chopped it up on the one on one. He left because he wanted to pursue his own solo career. I’ve known him for fifteen years plus. You never know what could happen within this industry. I really wish I could sit down with him on a one on one basis. Just to be able to talk to him man to man. I mean… he’s still a friend, he’s still a brother.
NobodySmiling.com : Since you say that he is working on a solo career – would you work with him in the future?
Juicy J : I mean… anything is possible. It’s all about coming together and working together. I knew him way before the music, when he was a dancer. So to sit down and talk about the situation like men would be the right thing to do.
NobodySmiling.com : Aside from the Oscar win, you guys are up for Best Hip-Hop Video for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. How do you feel about that?
Juicy J : Man, I am happy to just be nominated. You never know. I never get my hopes up high. I really feel like we won just because we’re nominated. We’ve been making music for years. We’ve been blessed to be able to attend these awards show, for real.
NobodySmiling.com : You should go back to the “Tear the Club Up” days and rock the gold fanged grill.
Juicy J : I still got those! I keep everything. I should do that. Thanks! I stay wearing the old school joints. I’m still the same dude. Nothing much has changed with me. I’m a believer that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I mean we partied hard when we won the Oscars, so it wouldn’t be any different when we win the MTV VMA’s. I’ll probably just pop some batteries.
NobodySmiling.com : Aside from retooling the album for re-release, you guys are working with Justin Timberlake for his upcoming joint. How’d that come about?
Juicy J : He had this song that he wanted to put us on. After we had won the Oscars, he called up the president of Sony Records. You know that we know that he’s from Memphis and we’ve hung out with him before. He just said that he wanted us on the album. Personally, I think that it can be a top ten hit. I think the title is “Chopped Up” or “Screwed Up” or something like that. I really haven’t heard it since we recorded it, but it’s a hot song. Timbaland did the track. Paul and me are rappin’ on it, Justin’s singing, and it’s smoking!
NobodySmiling.com : Pat – it’s good to hear you doing so well. Your single, “Good Googly Moogly” is doing well out there in the clubs. When is the album ready to drop?
Project Pat : Man, I’m thinking that the album is going to drop in October, somewhere around that time. The album is straight dirty south, y’all gonna like what I have on there for y’all.
Juicy J >: We’re just trying to make sure that we find the right song to put out there as the heat-maker. We want to give them [the listeners] something else to know that Pat is back and that he isn’t going anywhere.
NobodySmiling.com : What made you want to come out with a book?
Project Pat : I don’t know. I was locked up. Just sitting around and I figured that I would go ‘head and write something. When I finished it, I thought that it was a good book. I’m done with it now. I just have to go through putting on the finishing touches.
NobodySmiling.com : Are there any plans to turn that into a movie a la “Choices”…?
Juicy J : It’s a possibility, man. We’re trying to write music for movies. We’ve continued to put out the DVDs. Our focus is to be on the big screen.
Project Pat : I’d like to see anything with us turned into a movie. I don’t care if it’s about us being on the toilet. That’d be nice.
NobodySmiling.com : On the premiere episode of VH1’s “Flavor of Love” – you guys are supposed to make an appearance on the show. What are you guys doing with Flav?
Juicy J : I can’t really talk about what’s going on the show due to contractual obligations, but it’s funny and you’ll just have to tune in. It’s funny as all get out!
NobodySmiling.com : So, y’all aren’t helping him out with picking any of those ladies who are on the show, huh?
Juicy J : Man, they gave ‘em codenames! That was kind of ill. But there are some fine ones out there. This one girl… I can’t remember her name for nothing. She’s from the South, though. From Atlanta… that lil’ mama is sexy… and she knows it too!
Project Pat : I’d choose all of ‘em. I just got out. I would have all of them! [laughs]
NobodySmiling.com : Okay, no judging on “Flavor of Love,” but you did get a chance to hang with Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion. How did the performance go and what would you say is one of the coolest things about being at the Playboy Mansion?
Juicy J : Watching all them naked women walk around. It’s a good experience. Everyone is partying! Naked woman is like a commonplace over there. It’s all love, too. People are just all out in the open… chillin’. They knew who we were. When we performed, we did about five or six songs. It was funny. We had white girls dancing all over the place and they loved it.
NobodySmiling.com : You guys have a new label situation with Warner Bros. How did that come about? Also, what’s the status on the new album? Guest appearances, et cetera…
Juicy J : Three Six Mafia is still signed with Columbia. But we did this big deal [Hypnotized Minds] with Warner Brothers. We got our artist, Lil’ Whyte, coming out with something new. Our new album is halfway finished; we’re just making sure that we pick out the right singles. As of right now, we have nobody featured on there so far. But I have a lot of people in mind. I would probably like to work with, say… Linkin Park. I have all their albums. I’m a big fan. I like them because they reflect what we do. They’re different and that’s all we strive to be is different than everybody else.
Project Pat : I would work with anyone who’s out there and want to grind. It’s nothing to me, just as long as we churn out hits.
NobodySmiling.com : After winning an Oscar for the music created on a film – have any scripts or parts started coming in for your guys acting abilities?
Juicy J : A lot of scripts have come across our table. We try to mess with everything. Writing, acting, and scoring, as long as the checks clear, you know?! Personally, as far as movies go, I like dramas. I wouldn’t say that I would do any kind of movie. But I would like to do a drama or horror movie.
Project Pat : Man, they could call me for anything. I’d be there for it. [laughs]
