Brick & Lace - The Right Way
Interview By: Quinton Hatfield
Meet Nailah and Nyanda, sisters and Jamaican natives who make up the new sexy duo “Brick and Lace”. Coming from a country where Dancehall and Reggae dominate the music scene “Brick and Lace” will definitely have something to bring to the American mainstream.
With a hit single right now “Never, Never,” ripping the charts shows the star quality these sisters posses and something the music business should be on the watch for. Now it’s even crazier as they get up with music sensation Akon on Kon Live, his personal label. With his success Akon will no doubt guide these future divas in the right direction. There is definitely a meaning to “Brick and Lace” and the sisters will fill us in.
Nobodysmiling.com : With you two both being from Jamaica what will bring with your sound to America?
Nailah : Well were definitely bringing that Jamaican flavor as that is a huge part of who we are, that was who we are since the beginning of the game. Growing up in Jamaica we were exposed to pop music, gospel music, just different genres you know and we really gravitated to R&B. Groups like En vogue, SWV, TLC, watching them we learned to harmonize and stuff like that. Then being in Jamaica with the Dancehall and Reggae was always around so our music naturally is at the highest rate of the two genres.
Nobodysmiling.com : So the music scene in Jamaica is mostly Reggae?
Nyanda : Yeah mostly Reggae and Dancehall.
Nobodysmiling.com : Tell me something I don’t know about Jamaica?
Nyanda : Well Jamaica has other types of music besides the Reggae and Dancehall. Actually in the inner city area in the ghettos they love Celine Dion.
Nailah : That alone is an eye-opener because people don’t know they lose it over Celine.
Nobodysmiling.com :: I know Jamaica has a lot of fine women out there like ya’ll?
Nyanda : Thank You.
Nailah : Thank you, a lot of people don’t now that Jamaica produces very beautiful women. People usually act surprised and I be like “Why are you surprised”.
Nobodysmiling.com : Being sisters how is that tough also being artist too?
Nailah : Well it’s a good thing as we have a lot of experience together. It’s good that we know each other very well and have good chemistry, because that’s what you need in this industry.
Nobodysmiling.com : How did you get up with Akon?
Nyanda : Akon was presented to our label after he heard us bring the heat. He liked what we were doing and we liked what he was doing. Working with Akon was definitely a lot of fun and the chemistry was good we are just so glad to be a part of that time.
Nobodysmiling.com : What’s the best thing about working with Akon?
Nailah : He’s energy and full of positive energy. Were always cracking jokes on each and it’s just a positive vibe it’s like we knew him from high school or something.
Nobodysmiling.com : Explain the name Brick and Lace?
Nailah : Our mom came up with Lace and it was nice, but we were like it was too soft.
Nyanda : We just felt we had another side to us that speaks to the music. People need to know we are not soft all the time, but we also have our strong side.
Nailah : When people hear the music they say “Oh my God Lace, but they definitely have some Brick up in there”.
Nobodysmiling.com : Ya’ll be confusing people having us thinking one is Brick and the other is Lace?
Nyanda : No, Brick and Lace is a concept... it’s like everyone is Brick and Lace. Everyone has two sides to them as that what Brick and Lace is... two sides of a women.
Nobodysmiling.com : Why Brick and Lace are some of the sexiest girls in the game right now?
Nyanda : The fact that we can mix it up as we be on our P’s and Q’s and can be taken to a concert and be appreciated by the guys there.
Nailah : Another thing is that we didn’t grow up in the ghetto, but we realize were not better than anybody as were all equal. Everybody is trying to make it and be happy and that’s why were sexy, especially being from Jamaica. Our parents helped us realize this from the beginning.
Nobodysmiling.com : Your parents were looking-out for ya’ll.
Nyanda : Yeah fa sho.
Nobodysmiling.com : Ya’ll both single?
Nyanda : Yeah.
Nailah : Yeah at the moment.
Nobodysmiling.com : Now that ya’ll in the industry somebody going to try to get at ya’ll now.
Nailah : We will like that and see what happens [laughs].
Nobodysmiling.com : Tell me about the new album?
Nyanda : It’s called “Love is Wicked” and it’s going to be the hottest album out for the summer.
Nailah : We just really put a lot of hard work into this album and worked with some really dope producers. It’s just really one of those special albums and we want to keep it that way.
Nobodysmiling.com : That’s crazy ya’ll called the album “Love is Wicked” ya’ll not wicked are you?
Nyanda : We are wicked [laughs], wicked can make you feel so high and so low sometimes.
Nailah : Love can be wicked as it can make you feel very good and very bad.
Nobodysmiling.com : You know how it is “Love is Blind”?
Nyanda : Yeah love is very blind.
Nailah : Yeah [laughs].
Nobodysmiling.com : Brick and Lace is not wicked though?
