Quik - Longevity

Interview By: Quinton Hatfield

Quik InterviewDJ Quik or now as he wants to be known, Quik is definitely a pioneer of the west coast hip-hop scene. While through the years you had other west coast legends such as Dr. Dre, Too Short, Snoop Dogg, E-40, and others, Quik was a man that had his own identity. With over a decade in the game many fans of Quik respect the west coast vet for his longevity and the classic material he brought us over the years. Remember his man AMG from back in the day that had the song “Bitch Better Have My Money”, well to make a long story short AMG and Quik are now The Fixxers and with a new deal with Interscope we are about to get a little more than “Can U Werk Wit Dat” as Nobodysmiling.com gets up with the legendary DJ Quik as we first knew him on some talk about The Fixxers, why the music business is fun and the new album.

Quik Quote Nobodysmiling.com : Quik how you feel about the fans response to “Can U Werk Wit Dat”?

Quik : It was a dream and it was crazy and I thank everybody that showed love.

Nobodysmiling.com : Where did the concept originate from?

Quik : Eventually we was just having a good time in the studio. Partying in the studio turns into records and that’s how it always been and that’s how it will always be.

Nobodysmiling.com : I see [laughs], I was feeling the video and everything, especially with all the ladies ya’ll had?

Quik : Thank you and I appreciate the love my dude, yeah it’s some pretty ladies out there. You have a lot of big-booty shaking turkey butt girls, but it’s still some distinguished pretty females out there. We just had to do something classy so it ain’t all about stripping and all that I do is put strippers on the pole.

Nobodysmiling.com : [Laughs], I’m not even going to lie though the girl in the green sitting on AMG’s lap was my favorite?

Quik : True that, I think she was Puerto-rican.

Nobodysmiling.com : Yeah, where did ya’ll find that at?

Quik : Casting, we got a crew of casting girls. I’m trying to be real about it [laugh], it was a very fly day.

Nobodysmiling.com : At least you keeping it real [laughs]?

Quik : Yeah!

Nobodysmiling.com : You and AMG go way back why did you decide to start “The Fixxers” now?

Quik : You know everybody ask that question and that’s a good question. We humbled ourselves to get together and get this paper. It’s real simple what were doing, it’s our company, were the best at it and it’s turning into dollars. We like making dollars and it’s as simple as that, it’s a business. We laugh at what we do in music, it’s not like we have to get up in the morning and bust our ass. Were just having fun as artists applying it and getting paid. It’s simple, well at least we think it is.

Nobodysmiling.com : Will the new “Fixxers” album coming out be like a party album?

Quik : I don’t wanna just say that, because there are days that I been through what you been through... that we gonna address. We touch all subjects a little bit not all G-Funked out or Gangsta rap, but it’s gonna be a dope album. What I like most about it is that it’s real fun at the same time, but it’s dark like my older shit.

Nobodysmiling.com : As far as the production, did you produce the whole album?

Quik : We both doing the production chores. AMG is doing most of the music right now and I’m doing most of the engineering. We just hired a young cat and it’s the first time I ever did a collab with a young producer, I’m just watching him grow and he comes from a pedigree of dope people. It’s just fun to see him do his thing and be able to observe, because his music is crazy. It’s actually fun to work on your music, it’s hard but it’s fun and all three of us me, AMG, and the youngin are doing it.

Nobodysmiling.com : Can you tell me about the deal with Interscope?

Quik : Just a single deal right now, but we look forward to doing bigger and better things with the whole Interscope family. Their finding artists to keep their machine rolling like they been for all these years.

Nobodysmiling.com : When the album drops will ya’ll have a lot of special features?

Quik : I don’t know... we got a couple right now, but were keeping low about it. Were working on the album as we speak so if something changes when we put it out there it’s not a good look for us. You might hear a Yung Joc on there, Jim Jones, you might here some of your favorite people and people that you haven’t heard in a longtime, but still big you know.

Nobodysmiling.com : I want to know why you dropped DJ Quik from your name and now just want to be called Quik?

Quik : My dude first of all that was my nickname in the beginning, but I figured that you needed a title so that’s why I picked DJ. For the most part I took the craft and art of DJing real seriously.

Nobodysmiling.com : What’s the chemistry like when you and AMG get in the studio together?

Quik : It’s magic hopefully when we get our reality TV show ya’ll will be just as entertained as we are.

Nobodysmiling.com :: I’m looking forward to a TV show with ya’ll!

Quik : Yeah man we The Fixxers baby. That’s the funny thing it sounds funny, but when you look at how we really get down we really kick that Fixxer shit. I be going over peoples houses rearranging their protools to their in-boxes and shit helping get the shit to work... then leave and just be giggling. It’s funny to know technology is just a beautiful thing.

Nobodysmiling.com : Quik how you feel about the music in hip-hop right now?

Quik : Judging from what I hear versus what’s selling and what people perceive as hot that’s a little bit of disarray right now. The industry isn’t what it used to be and that has effected everybody’s perception of it, of how music is. On top of that the music is suffering, it used to be it was all about the music, and now that the music is suffering it’s like “How you can be in the music industry and not be selling music”, that’s just a weird thing. I’m proud of Nas saying what he said dealing with the heat that comes from saying that especially with his peers, I’m loving what Luda’s doing. It’s actually great it’s real lucrative I can’t say that it’s all bad, it’s bad for people that can’t accept change.

Nobodysmiling.com : With you being in the game for a minute what’s the toughest thing about the business overall?

Quik : I don’t think it’s anything tough about the music business I think it’s all what you make it. The toughest thing with people is that they forget you get into this to have a good time. That’s what it’s for, it’s a business but you get in to do your thing and have a ball, it’s simple as that.

Nobodysmiling.com : What you think fans appreciate most about Quik?

Quik : Now or in the past?

Nobodysmiling.com : Both?

Quik : I think the longevity more than anything else. I’ll be the first to say I had my ups and downs and some of my downs were tragic, but not as bad as anybody else that has done things wrong. Now everything just makes sense, I don’t fill myself with negative thoughts, I fill myself thinking that I am. I’m actually having a good time doing my music, doing the best that I can, and watching my friends around me do the same thing. It’s actually a lot of fun to be in the music business right now as we speak.

Ya'll got to be girls talkin bout hairstyles and such. Quick should be respected just like dre, cube or any other poineer in this game. Not to mention you could never question this n*ggas street. He's always been real, he grew up and matured & ain't always gangsta gangsta. This n*gga still can get your cap peeled if you come at him wrong though.

Quik has been and continues to be dope. In these days of bubble gum rap, artistic creativity is not appreciated. Its "my lip gloss be poppin" that's popular and the rhythmalism of quik that is forgotten. Long live quik, he is a true hip hop hero!
