Numskull - Tripping On Nothing
Interview by: Quinton Hatfield
Remember the duo The Luniz from back in the day with Yukmouth and Numskull. If not well how about the hit single from back in they day 'I Got Five On It'. Yeah these Bay area vets were doing they thing back in the day and now Nobodysmiling.com gets with one half of the duo, Numskull to see what's been really good lately. With the hyphy craze on the rise in hip-hop right now Numskull is doing all he can to support it. Besides that though he talks on The Luniz, the record deal situation with Virgin, and why hip-hop is not dead and why someone would say it is.
[ Nobodysmiling.com : With you being one of the vets from the Bay are how you feel about the impact the hyphy movement is making in hip-hop right now?
Numskull : I'm from the town so anything that comes from the town I'm with it. We need it back, its time so there it is.
Nobodysmiling.com : Why you think so many people are paying attention to the movement outside the Bay area right now?
Numskull : Because it's something that people want, it's something different, it's something new, and everything that gets out of the town people try to get into it. They love it, because were trendsetters and we love that. It's something brand new from us, they haven't heard from us in a while and they just love it. That's why they love it, because they know it's a good thing.
Nobodysmiling.com : Numskull so what are your contributions to the Bay are hyphy movement right now?
Numskull : Just supporting the Bay like I did back when I was young, just like Too Short came with his music. Just when they were supporting me growing up listening to my stuff I'm a support them youngsters doing they thing.
Nobodysmiling.com : So with the "Ghostridin" can you tell me how long that's been going on with you being a vet from the area?
Numskull : actually I don't even know how long that's been around man to tell you the truth, I don't even do it.
Nobodysmiling.com : It's news stories all over the U.S. about it, but I'm loving it though.
Numskull : Yeah I'm loving it too. I just ain't doing it [laughs].
Nobodysmiling.com : I see you trying to protect your life huh [laughs]?
Numskull : Man all day, my ride too [laughs] and if I don't know how to do it I ain't trying it [laughs].
Nobodysmiling.com : What's Numskull riding in right now?
Numskull : Aw man I'm riding in anything I can get my hands on [laughs]. I'm not tripping on nothing I'm riding in anything [laughs].
Nobodysmiling.com : You scrapping?
Numskull : I'm scrapping and riding in everything.
Nobodysmiling.com : Numskull everybody know you from the group The Luniz, how you feel about being one of the great duos in hip-hop?
Numskull : Man I was glad me and Yukmouth was able to be a part of that and can say in my life that was an achievement. I love my life and nothing can ever take that away, no bullshit.
Nobodysmiling.com : How far you and Yukmouth go back?
Numskull : We go back about eighteen years.
Nobodysmiling.com : How is the current relationship right now, any music ya'll working on?
Numskull : Yeah, we working on a new Luniz album.
Nobodysmiling.com : What's the name of it?
Numskull : We don't know yet, but I don't want to call it the "Return of the Luniz" or no crap like that.
Nobodysmiling.com : Can we get another fire track like 'I Got Five on it'?
Numskull : We can try man, but we can't do another 'I Got Five on it' [laughs].
Nobodysmiling.com : That's classic material right there in everybody's house.
Numskull : Yeah man and we glad it's like that.
Nobodysmiling.com : The Luniz were signed with Virgin, so what happened with that deal?
Numskull : Oh Virgin they was just a one hit thing. If you got one hit they don't want to spend no money they want you to ride off the first phase. You can't do that... you have to keep spending money if you want to keep making money.
Nobodysmiling.com : So with the album "Operation Stackola" they didn't want to do too much?
Numskull : First of all I think they picked the wrong single. Me and Yuk didn't want 'Me And You', you can't drop 'I Got Five on It' then come on some personal 'Me and You' song. We did it anyway, because that's what they were paying for, but we asked them not too. They did it anyway and people were not feeling that coming right after 'I Got Five on It'.
Nobodysmiling.com : Speaking on 'I Got Five On It', what was the motivation behind that song?
Numskull : Being broke and only having five dollars.
Nobodysmiling.com : [Laughs], that's real talk right there.
Numskull : Man, it is.
Nobodysmiling.com : I remember you was with the crew B.W.P.(Brothers With Potential), tell some history behind that.
Numskull : That was a group I had in junior high school when we was winning talent shows and all that. When Yuk came to the school he busted a rap and I put him in the group. Me and Yuk was the only ones that stuck together after all of this too.
Nobodysmiling.com : Where "Brothers With Potential" come from?
Numskull : Man I have no idea [laughs], we had potential. We were brothers you know.
Nobodysmiling.com : Now your with Ball or Fall records, how did that come about?
Numskull : One of my folks knew these from 38th and I was working on another album and was looking for a deal and they was ready. We met up, I let them hear some stuff, they put me in a studio we signed the contract and we as good.
Nobodysmiling.com : Next project coming from Ball or Fall?
Numskull : They got Sean Paul from the YoungBloodz coming out along with J-Bo too. They got a couple more artists like Bugsy, and me.
Nobodysmiling.com : You said Sean Paul and J-Bo coming out on there, because there was rumors they were signed to Dipset South?
Numskull : Well people do different deals for different things, I just know that their doing an album with them.
Nobodysmiling.com : Numskull being a vet how you feel about the statement "Hip-hop is Dead"?
Numskull : It can't be so whoever is saying it... kiss mine.
Nobodysmiling.com : [Laughs] Hold up why you feel that way?
Numskull : How is hip-hop dead, hip-hop is what we do, hip-hop is this planet we live on. Wherever you go and you see these youngsters out here acting a fool that's hip-hop. When you go outside and you see that car out there that looks good that's hip-hop. When you see those dudes out there playing dominos that's hip-hop, that's what we are and that's what were made of.
Nobodysmiling.com : Why you think somebody would say something like that?
Numskull : Because they hate hip-hop [laughs] and they can't do what we do.
