So with this exclusive interview Nobodysmiling.com gives you the life of the DJ as Bedtyme 357 tells why he loves it, why the DJ is important in hip-hop, and how he ended up being Remy Ma's official DJ and why he gets to see the real Remy without all the assumptions everybody makes.
Nobodysmiling.com : First off you go by the name of DJ Bedtyme 357 so where does the name come from?
DJ Bedtyme : It's a family name really as I'm the youngest child in my crew back in the days when I was in the 6th and 7th grade. When everybody wanted to hang-out I was the only one with a curfew. It was the curfew to bedtime when they made Bedtyme spit.
Nobodysmiling.com : That's real creative so you had to be in bed early.
DJ Bedtyme : Yeah mean on that street life shit you know what I mean.
Nobodysmiling.com : Well you know how it is in the hood cats be wildin the peeps was just looking out for you.
DJ Bedtyme : [Laughs], definitely man that's what I took it as. They was looking out so I look at the fine product that came out all of that.
Nobodysmiling.com : No doubt so when you realized you wanted to be a DJ?
DJ Bedtyme : Truthfully I never really wanted to be a DJ I was kind of pushed into this situation. My brother Chuck he was the one DJing and I was just setting up the shows for him like managing him almost. It got to the point where we was collecting peoples deposits and putting everything under contract. When it came to his regular job he couldn't make it to the parties on time so somebody had to be down there to start the music until he got there. What happen was people started requesting me more and more they was like "We want the DJ that was at the beginning of the party" so one thing lead to another and DJ Bedtyme been popping ever since.
Nobodysmiling.com : So were you nervous when you got your first gig?
DJ Bedtyme : Man I think a sense of nervousness comes with every show from the first one to the ones we do now. I think that's a good thing though, but that keeps me motivated to give a better performance.
Nobodysmiling.com : When you first started DJing was it hard for you using the turntables?
DJ Bedtyme : Pretty much grasping the concept of it putting the music together with adding and scratching shit, but after a while you do what you do.
Nobodysmiling.com : Who were some of your favorite DJ's growing up?
DJ Bedtyme : I definitely have to say my man DJ Kool Kid he was a real good friend of mine. I grew up pretty much around him when he was coming up I'm actually older than him, but that's like the closest DJ inspiration I had. Of course Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, but definitely my man Kool Kid because he was the closest thing to me.
Nobodysmiling.com : Tell me your history where you from, what you representing?
DJ Bedtyme : I'm from Mount Vernon New York and I'm running in Yonkers , New York . 914 area code we right outside of the Bronx . I hold it down on the Mount Vernon side of things.
Nobodysmiling.com : Being a DJ tell me why the DJ is important in hip-hop?
DJ Bedtyme : Because the DJ's are the ones who really break the new music. We the ones who getting the party popping, we the ones breaking new artists,we are the street corner A&R, because everybody say they man is the hottest rapper or the homeboy or homegirl is the hottest R&B singer in the hood. We the ones who bring those hot artists to the forefront whether it be the parties, mixtapes, or whatever.
Nobodysmiling.com : I want to see DJ Bedtyme on ' Rap City ' one day.
DJ Bedtyme : Oh yeah we already did that man that's old news. Not saying it can't happen again like I won't do it again, but we did that. Last year I popped up in July it was right before Summer Jam I was up there with DJ Khaled and Mad Linx.
Nobodysmiling.com : How did you become Remy Ma's tour DJ?
DJ Bedtyme : Lets get that correct I'm not Remy's tour DJ I'm Remy's official DJ and it's been that way for about a year and a half now going on two years now. It's been a lot of mix-ups in the press and media, but I've been her official DJ for about a year and some change. That came about with my management team Inasirkl Music Group collaborated with her management for a showcase they put together in conjunction with Smack DVD. I was the DJ for the party and I did my 1, 2 that night and the next day I went overseas to go on a tour with CL Smooth, because I was his tour DJ. When I came back to the states word got around that Remy's management was looking for me, because she was looking for a DJ. One thing lead to another and till this day I'm still doing it with her.
Nobodysmiling.com : What you like most about Remy Ma as an artist?
DJ Bedtyme : She's a real individual man that's the one thing I like about Remy. A lot of people have assumptions about her character, how she handles business, the way she talks, but again that's all assumptions. I'm with her almost 80% of the day and I can just see the real Remy so her genuineness is what I like about her the most.
Nobodysmiling.com : What you like most about DJing?
DJ Bedtyme : I like the interaction between myself and the crowd. There is nothing like djing in a arena or a big club and the whole crowd is rocking with you. Regardless of what you putting on and how you putting it on if they feeling the way you handling your business you gonna know it and if they don't like it you definitely gonna know it. That's what I like about it most the interaction between myself and the crowd.
Nobodysmiling.com : If there was one place you would like to DJ where would it be?
DJ Bedtyme : Aw man I don't have one place in particular, but the past year and some change I've been traveling all-over the world. I pretty much got to see the reaction with any place I go to by the grace of God. People been feeling what I do, but I can't single out one spot.
Nobodysmiling.com : Being a DJ who are some of your favorite DJ's in the game right now?
DJ Bedtyme : Definitely DJ Kay Slay, Funkmaster Flex, I don't like his character but I respect his grind. My man Kool Kid definitely, it's a couple different ones man.
Nobodysmiling.com : Kay Slay's one of my favorite too that's the Drama King.
DJ Bedtyme : Oh yeah Kay Slay I came up following him, listening to his mixtapes and following the Street Sweepers Movement.
Nobodysmiling.com : No doubt, I smack the shit outta favorite DJ [laughs]!
DJ Bedtyme : [Laughs], my man Big Lou just signed with Street Sweepers. Big Lou came up not with me, but he came up through the showcase run. I was DJing at all the prominent showcases in NYC and in Philly so Big Lou came through that circuit and he wounded up getting signed to Street Sweepers so that's a real good look for him. Chrisette Michelle the same way now she on Def Jam doing her numbers.
Nobodysmiling.com : With you being a DJ on the grind you have anything to say to the upcoming DJ's that want to do what you do?
DJ Bedtyme : Only thing I can say is if you believe in what you do stay motivated enough to continue man. It's gonna be hurdles that's placed in front of you, but you gotta look beyond that man that's only temporary. If you motivated enough to believe in yourself and believe you got what it takes to succeed then keep on going man just do what you do.
Nobodysmiling.com : Alright DJ Bedtyme appreciate the interview you have anything to say to the readers of NOBODYSMILING.COM?
DJ Bedtyme : Man good look on the interview I definitely appreciate the love wherever ya'll at. The Uncrowned King of New York DJ Bedtyme 357, definitely hit up the myspace on myspace.com/djbedtyme
