Wu-Tang Clan Reunites For One Show
Friday, November 12, 2004 By: Dondiego
The nine members of the veteran rap group The Wu-Tang Clan will reconvene tonight at The Theater at the Continental Airlines Arena for their first joint East Coast appearance in five years.
More a collective than a band, The Wu-Tang Clan -- GZA, Method Man, RZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, U-God and Inspectah Deck -- came together in Staten Island in the early '90s. RZA was the principal producer and musical visionary, Method Man the most charismatic performer, Ol' Dirty Bastard often the comic relief.
"It's like a family reunion," says Gary Grice, better known as GZA, 38, of Jersey City. "It's always good to get back and kick it and see what's on each other's minds and give people a show."
The Clan hasn't reconvened for a studio album since "Iron Flag" (2001). They released a live album, "Disciples of the 36 Chambers: Chapter 1," in September. Beyond the Meadowlands show, the group has no definite plans.
GZA suspects the Clan may be nearing the end of its run.
"We all have our own goals," he says. "I think I will always be involved in hip-hop on some level, but I don't think we will be making too many more albums as a Clan. Maybe one more. I don't know how many members want to continue to do this as a group. It's been 10-plus years, so it's just time to move on."
