Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels Hosts 'Women and AIDS in Africa'

Tuesday, May 3, 2005
By: Dondiego

Darryl DMC McDanielsWomen are now most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. According to the United Nations, more than half of the 25 million people living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa are women, and nearly half of their babies will become infected at birth in the absence of intervention. But new research from Harvard School of Public Health's AIDS Initiative shows promise in blocking the transmission of HIV from mother to infant, safeguarding the next generation. The benefit dinner and silent auction will help support HAI's efforts to stem the AIDS epidemic and will keep current projects in Africa moving forward. Recent research developments will be presented and discussed at the benefit.

Event host DMC said, "We need to make people aware that AIDS is still killing people everyday, and the people in Africa are hardest hit with the epidemic especially women and children. The scientists and researchers at HAI are doing something about it, and they are really helping us all have hope for the future. They are fighting AIDS everyday but this battle can't be fought alone. We all need to come together and be part of this journey of saving lives and help create a real strong future."

For almost two decades, HAI has been dedicated to promoting research, education and leadership to end the AIDS epidemic. As the number of AIDS cases continues to escalate disproportionately in Africa and other resource scarce settings, HAI has directed its research efforts toward developing prevention and treatment strategies to stem the epidemic in these regions.
