Spike Lee's Choice Words For Quentin Tarantino

Wednesday, June 15, 2005
By: brooklyniteOne

Spike LeeDirector Spike Lee is still upset after his feud with Quentin Tarantino, when the Kill Bill director stated that Lee's films were more popular to black audiences.

Spike Lee claims that Quentin Tarantino told him he knew more about African-Americans and black cinema-goers prefer his films.

Bamboozled and Malcolm X director says, "He said, 'No black people watch your films.' For anybody to say they know someone else's culture better than they do! Even if they think it."

Spike Lee also accuses Tarantino of encouraging white people to use the word "n**ger" - through his use of it in films.

Lee adds, "He got a lot of white boys messed up using that word around the wrong black person. 'Hey what's up my n**ger?' Say it to the wrong person and you get your head punched in."

Why does spike care so much about tarantinos comments? he's obviously threatened by a superior director who may be right about blacks liking his movies better. Spike just needs to return to making great films like "do the right thing," and quit venting everything to the press.

What's it to you what he cares about his comments? who says that A**hole tarantino is superior -- have you seen any of spike lee's films beyond do the right thing?

As an italian american, i must say that i have a real problem with the way he portrays italian americans in his, at their very best rather mediocre films. Without exception he depicts italians using the very worst stereotypes. I wonder how spike would feel about a director using amos and andy stereotypes to depict all of his african american characters, that's pretty much the equivalent of what he does. Spike is a hypocrite and just an average talent.

Lee is just jealous because he hates italians and tarantino is an italian (half) who makes better movies than him.

That doesn't make any sense. To make you look stupid spikes dad is italian so what do you mean. He got his inflences from "do the right thing" from his dad. Tarantino is ignorant and spike is a much more well rounded film director.

Ok everyone, quite frankly i also feel that spike lee is a mediocre talent at best. Now, that does not mean that tarantino is a superb talent either, but he has much more of a creative spark. Lee uses ethnic stereotypes to portray every single one of his characters, his movie plots are quite predictable and overly dramatic. While he attempts to confront racism - he does so by using the very same conventions that the "man" has used against minorities for all these years. Therefore, through his offensive rendering of various ethnic groups, he is only keeping a very old and very destructive way of thinking alive.

I think you need to reevaluate that opinion. Watch do the right thing and notice how spike masterfully creates several characters that represent different personalites within one race that can be transferred to any other race. (ex: italian race: pino, the hotheaded, likeable, quick witted, hateful biggot, then theres sal the level headed, industious, personable, caring , sincere business man. Then there is vito the less assertive, easy going, innocent, little brother type.) within one race spike has created a broad range of personalities that can be applied to any race. Spike does not portray each race as one monolithic group of people. Just becuase one of his italian characters happens to be an ignorant biggot does not mean that all italians are biggots, spike demonstrates this by creating a wide array of different personalities amoung the italians. There are biggots in every race just like there are open minded people in every race. I would argue that, although some characters of like races in this movie use like vernacular, no character is an example of a racial stereotype, some characters are an example of a personality stereotype (like pino who is that loudmouth ignoramus that exists within every race and sal who is that caring, hardworking, respectable businessman of unimpeachable character that exists in every race) but spike creates enough of a variety of these personalities within each race to show that there is a broad spectrum of personalities within every race and every race shares t

Lee movies are stupid and racist, tarantino movies are known all around the world. If you say tarantino everybody knows him. There are certainly more people worldwide that know tarantino movies than lee.

They're two differant types of directors trying to entertain and inform in two differant ways. I'm from new orleans, and the word n*gga' is used alot, but not as a racist statment, just as a use of everyday conversation. Black people say it to other black people all the time like "what up ma n*gga'." white people say it to white people in the same way. But notice how it's being said, n*gga', with an "a" at the end insted of an "er". That's what sepperates the meanning, so there for, it's two differant types of words. I think that is what tarantino was doing, using common lingo in everyday dialogu, that's what he is known for. Spike lee just took it the wrong way, he jumped to conclutions. I mean, this is the 21st century, words change, history changes. Trust me, you can tell the one who are racist and the ones who aren't.

Tarantino is a fine director, but his films don't have a point. Spike lee has put race on the map in a way that few other filmmakers have, and paved the way for many african-americans in all positions in cinema today. Both lee and tarantino have had their duds. Lee tends to work with much smaller budgets, and i, for one, find his work much more creative and enjoyable. Spike lee's films depict real people struggling with social issues; tarantino prefers the glitzed-up gore. I'm white, and if asked to pick the better director, i would point to lee without hesitation.

Spike lee i was wondering what inspired you to be what you are now.

That's funny [pointless comments will be deleted]. How would you have a message board? why is everyone so angry about everything? i've watched several films by both directors. I have to say spike lee uses a ton of racial stereotypes and slurs in his films and they aren't all that entertaining to me (before you start calling me a bigot becasue i don't necessarily find this director's films that enthralling and he happens to be black i'm saying they aren't able to entertain, i just haven't been wowed by them) but if a white director uses the same thing he gets slammed for racism. If a black director has a man of any color saying the word N*gg*r he is confronting racism and breaking social taboos (whether he is or not) and if a white director does he's a racist. Despite the fact that 'N*gg*r' has the same meaning regardless of who says it. I think all this bullsh*t is doing is unfortunately cementing the misconstrued idea that different color skin should mean different priviledges and acceptability. Either the rules apply to everyone or no one. Otherwise that is the bigotry.

Woops! what i meant to say above is that i don't think lee's films don't have the ability to entertain, they just don't do anything for me. Other people seem to enjoy them quite well. Except italians. Don't tell me that dialogue is natural.

Taratino is ignorant. Lee is ignorant. Most of holywood is ignorant...no use fighting about it.

Spike is a bug eyed bigot that can not get over the color of his skin. Put it this way - if his coffee was accidently served luke warm by a white person, he would cry racism. Miserable little runt.

both spike and quenton are excellent directors. I love most of spikes movies/a few of quentins. Both have made turkeys. As for the portrayal of italions. They have the mafia, which is still around today. Although it is weaker today, the mafia would be stronger if it's present/future generations, had heeded the advice of the old mustache petes and kept a low profile. The mafia is glorified, thru movies/tv shows (sopranos). Let society have a show about the crips/bloods on a regular weekly basis. Despite the degenerate characters in the sopranos/organization, you couldn't, even despict the same in the crips/bloods, or el-ricans. Such as carmelo soprano being a pta member, and running the catholic bake sale for her parish, and making sure daughter meadow gets into columbia. And dad tony keeps her from dating a bi-racial -jewish black kid whose father was a entertainment lawyer, or spoiled son aj dating a black puerto girl with a baby. I am a.a. And a soprano fan. But i know the differences that are spewed by the comments i have read, those pro italion comments havn't watch the show lately in its re-run on hbo/a-e. Spike nor quentin did not write these shows. John gotti was betrayed by tony the bull. Died in a 3x5 cell. Where was the code of silence? (this thing of ours). People are people with faults. Spike was right no one from another race can write about anothers culture, better then your own. Ps. Remember joe valachi?

Spike needs work. He needs to be involved in an intense movie project so he won't have time to think about what tarantino is saying. Spike acts like he has alot of free time and money. Some people talk, and some make films...

Everyone needs to calm down. You should watch the movie you like, and not watch the ones you don't like. And for the person who called spike a miserable runt. Theres 2 sides to every story. And sometimes people hide behind the net to voice themselves. So unless your gonna call spike up and tell him this. You need to close your mouth

It is clear that everyone is missing the point, the n word is a nasty degrading word towards black people, however if black people don't see it that way than they deserve to be treated like trash; this is not about the movies or directors achievements, it is about promoting hate and degrading black people; sadly many african american don't see it that way; they believe they have the right to be ghetto and it is glorious to be looked down on; the saying "if you don't respect yourself no one will respect you" is an accurate statement of the conditions that the african a. Spike lee and quentin tarentino are both brilliant directors. They make different genre of mivies. Spike lee's movies are more serious. Because tarentino's movies are gore ridden, they play to different audiences. Spike lee has developed into a masterful artist. He is brilliant. His movies don't cater to just black audiences anymore. His movies are analyzed by film aficionados all over the world.

Movies. Sorry.

I like both spike lee and quentin tarantino's films. Why do we have to love one and hate the other? as for the n word, it depends on how you say it. Just like the f word, it may be used in a positive or negative way. Examples: "she looks f-ing good" - positive. "f you, b" - negative. "what's up, my n?" - positive. "f you, n" - negative. People consider this hate if a black person says it and it's racism if a white person says it.
