Common To Release Mini-Movie
Tuesday, August 16, 2005 By: John Kennedy
Common will bring the vivid lyrics of “Testify” to life as a mini-movie.
“Testify” will be the third single from his latest project, Be, and the video’s shooting will take place this week in Los Angeles. Anthony Mandler, who directed Snoop Dogg’s “Ups & Downs/ Bang Out” video, will add “Testify” to his directorial portfolio.
The short film starts in a Chicago police interrogation room, where a wife is questioned about her husband’s involvement in a murder/drug deal. Common then performs the song in a courtroom as a court reporter.
The story’s plot centers around the internal strife of a wife while her husband is on trial, only to reveal an unexpected twist at the end.
“I was thinking “The Usual Suspects” when I wrote it,” Common said recently. “You believe the whole time that the character is doing something but then you find out something different.”
Common will perform on the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music tour along with label mates Kanye West and John Legend. The three will also join force for an MTV2 $2 Bill Concert in Los Angeles on Sept. 10. Common was also invited to the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 28, where "Go" is a contender for Best Hip-Hop Video.
