Juvenile’s Home Destroyed By Hurricane Katrina
Thursday, September 1, 2005 By: John Kennedy
Hurricane Katrina proved that disasters don’t discriminate, as New Orleans-bred rapper Juvenile lost his home in the most destructive storm in U.S. history.
“I am obviously devastated by my personal loss,” Juvenile said in a press release, “but thank God that I was able to get my family out to safety while many families were not so fortunate.”
Juve continued, “I have lost some friends and to their families I send my deepest condolences. It is difficult to describe the feeling of losing friends, not being able to reach others and having all of your personal items destroyed, but I am still one of the fortunate ones to have my music industry family supporting me.”
Juvenile is asking for donations to the Red Cross to help aid Katrina’s victims.
“Thousands of people have nobody to reach out to for support. Please keep our city, its people and our families in your prayers and please donate to the Red Cross. The people that have been evacuated have nothing with them, no clothes, shoes, toothbrushes – nothing. Please be prepared to donate whatever you can.”
Amanda Lepof, an American Red Cross In-Kind Officer, said that the best way to send aid to survivors is to make monetary donations, rather than sending clothing or food.
"While that generous spirit is truly appreciated, the American Red Cross cannot accept this type of donation for the victims it is serving,” she said. “In-kind donations are best when they come from companies that can provide new items in a quantity that meets the mass care needs of victims – for example, Anheuser-Busch is again donating canned water for hurricane victims and response workers.”
Juvenile plans on putting together a benefit concert to raise money for hurricane victims.
In the mean time, monetary donations can be made by calling 1-800-HELPNOW or by accessing the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org
