Rappers Respond To Hurricane Katrina
Friday, September 2, 2005 By: John Kennedy
While New Orleans rappers such as Master P, Baby, Choppa, and Lil’ Wayne all endured tremendous losses as a result of the vicious Hurricane Katrina, many rappers, including themselves, have already taken the initiative to start rebuilding.
Jay-Z and Diddy have already pledged to donate $1 million each to the American Red Cross to help Katrina’s victims. Jay-Z told The Associated Press that he has also contacted Lebron James and Kanye West encouraging them to donate to the cause.
“This is our community,” Jay told The Associated Press. “When I turn on CNN, I see a lot of black people on the streets. I know it's other people too, but those projects have been hit hard.”
Lil’ Wayne and Baby plan on starting relief efforts and former Making the Band star Choppa has also donated $100,000 to the Red Cross, and has expressed interest in doing a benefit concert. Juvenile also has plans on performing a for benefit show.
Music networks MTV, VH1 and CMT plan to simulcast a live, multi-genre concert special Sept. 10 to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Among the already scheduled performers are Mississippi-bred rapper David Banner, Ludacris, Usher, and Alicia Keys. The Red Cross and similar organizations will receive the generated funds.
These efforts are all testaments that hip-hop does have a heart, indeed.
