Friday, September 23, 2005 By: Michael Ivey
Renowned southern indie label Swishahouse and Asylum Records have partnered to turn yet another Houston underground sensation into commercial success.
Released on September 13th Paul Wall’s major label debut “The People’s Champ” tops the Billboard 200 with 176,000 sold this week. “Sittin’ Sidewayz”, his first single, made the iced out former grill maker and street promoter for Houston DJ Mike Watts a constant image on BET and MTV since early summer. Wall appeared on MTV’s TRL just prior to the release of “The People’s Champ”. The album also premiered on MTV2’s “The Leak” and BET’s “Listening Party”.
The New York Daily News calls him the most credible white emcee since Marshall Mathers and Vibe magazine forecasts that Paul Wall will carry the torch for Houston.
The album features T.I., Lil’ Wayne, Mike Jones, Trey Songz, and BG. It also includes a limited edition chopped and screwed version.
