LL Cool J Says Lyrics Needs Balance

Sunday, October 2, 2005
By: Michael Ivey

LL Cool JVH1’s recent “Hip Hop Honors” lifetime achievement award recipient, LL Cool J, feels there are too many gangsters in rap.

According to one of the longest tenured professionals in music today (twenty plus years) the only way hip hop can lose it’s violent image is if emcees stop coming out as shooters and crack dealers.

LL Cool J is definitely encouraged by the lucrative business the music generates, saying “I think it’s afforded a lot of people great lifestyles.” However, his knowledge of the social impact rap lyrics have on youth and casual listeners prompted a call for more positive messages. He says, “so many people who are not really used to rap or don’t know anything about it think that that’s all there is.”

As an entertainer known more for his female oriented songs and hard core delivery, not content, LL feels the culture as a whole would benefit from more balance.

He is right. Most people are under the impression that you have to be a gangsta to be a rapper, but look a kanye, he is not a gangsta rapper and his music is really hot.

I think ll is right because all rappers do is have beef with one another and the at is setting a bad exemple for young ones today,i know because i'm in the 9th grade and i see how the rappers are affecting us teens today.i love hip hop i really do but it's more teens dieng of guns and drugs more than adults, they get it from the rappers.

Mos def! (most definitely) uncle l got a good point. However there is absolutely nothing wrong with painting a vivid picture of your urban experiences. Me personally i have written songs that have real content that may be hard for some to swallow. But ll is right there has to be a glimmer of positivity to give hope not hate.

I agree. Im from da hood 2 west philly. I understand where l is coming from but most people from da hood rap 2 get out so they share there exp. Through there music and the environment they came from and grew up around.

Uncle l...is one of my favorite rappers and he makes a good point. And i don't think he gets the credit he deserves. A lot a cats say he soft or whatever but he got a son and 4 daughters to set an example......and must we forget he has some of the greatest battles. And not everybody was born to be a gangsta. And for those who hate on him.....tell me how many other rappers got 12 albums under their belts and are certified gold or plat...not many

Good point. But although those r the experiences that ppl going through and use that to experience 'the come up' in the music industry, that shouldnt be the only message/content coming out of hip hop. Not to knock anybody's hustle but it's becoming cliche and boring. I understand that these r ppl's real life experiences but can we get some lupe/mos def somethin to break up the monotony of "stuntin like my daddy"?!?!

I totally agree with ll. Many of his and kanye's lyrics are prophetic. There are future leader, musicians, and other professionals who are fighting their way out of the 'hood and seeking to make their mark. Their stories nedd to be told as well.
