50 Cent Says All Publicity is Good
Friday, October 28, 2005 By: Michael Ivey
In response to protests that lead to Paramount pulling a billboard for his upcoming film “Get Rich or Die Tryin” in LA, 50 Cent says, “I do appreciate it. They are talking about it on media outlets I didn't have plans to market the movie to. They are helping me out.” Residents took issue with the fact that the ad, picturing 50’s tattooed, bullet riddled back as he holds a mic in one hand and a gun in the other, was located near an elementary school.
LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich sent a letter to Paramount, the films distributor, complaining that the ad promotes gun violence. 50 implies the protesters are hypocritical because, “they've seen a gun in tons of film advertising. If we walk into our local Blockbuster or place where we can rent a video, we'll see every kind of gun they manufacture on the cover of these films as a marketing tool.” The man who made his first millions via diss songs and promotion of an ultra gangster image feels, “some of these people just have an overall outlook on me that's negative.”
50 says he understands Paramount’s decision, and the LA community underestimates the intelligence of the kids: “They read the articles, they've seen the videos, they heard the music. When the film comes out, they're gonna see the film, regardless.”
