Ludacris Explains Confederate Flag Antics
Saturday, November 19, 2005 By: Michael Ivey
At the taping of last Saturday’s 3rd Annual Vibe Awards Ludacris rocked a Confederate flag during the show’s finale. He decided to wear the symbol of southern pride and racial oppression in order to “represent where we came from, to remind people that Ray Charles' original 'Georgia' was written because of that racism.” Charles’ cover of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia on My Mind” became Georgia’s state song in 1979.
Ludacris also pointed out that he dumped the flag, stomped it, and brought out an red, black, green flag afterwards because, “It is a representation and my interpretation of where we were and where we need to go. Racism is just as prevalent now and if we are not constantly mindful of our history and take charge of it, history is destined to repeat itself because of ignorance.” He concluded his explanation with “I hope people continue to question and challenge authority, media and themselves because questioning and challenging can only lead to enlightenment.”
