Hip-Hop Summit Action Network talk on Irv and Chris Gotti

Saturday, November 19, 2005
By: Melanie J Cornish

Irv Gotti"We demand equal justice and basic fairness in this case. The whole world is now watching how it appears America is putting hip-hop on trial," said the President of The Hip-Hop Action Summit Network (HSAN) Dr. Benjamin Chavis, in New York City on the case of the Gotti Brothers. The HSAN stands for equal justice for all and hopes that the brothers will receive an unbiased and fair trial.

Irv and Chris Gotti went into day two of their money laundering trial, at the Supreme Court in Brooklyn. The brothers have made considerable contributions to the 'evolution of hip-hop culture,' and Russell Simmons, Chairman of the HSAN emphasized his concerns being down to 'the government spending too much time on profiling and prosecuting members of the Hip-hop community and not enough protecting the community from known drug dealers and murderers who threaten us."

Benjamin chavis can't be serious.... This is a money laundering case for drug dealing so how can he complain that it's the hip hop community being victimised. I hate when stupied ppl try to defend ppl on the count of hip hop when they have no basis to stand on.

bluescatb says:
Well dr chavis, i don't know how the gotti bros. Have faired, but i do know that the "hip-hop culture" is under fire again, and rightfully so. The rand corp's study on the adverse effect of sexually explicit lyrics on our youth was very disturbing. Disturbing, because it confirmed what we've all known for a long time. You were quoted as saying these lyrics are a cultural expression that reflects the "social and economic realities" of the day. That may be so, but that doesn't change the responsibilities that those in power, in control, with influence have and should excercise to promote a loving, caring, thoughtful, considerate, respectful environment for our youth, and all of humanity to co-exist. That means doing what's right! that means pulling your head out of the sand, and acknowledging that f-bombs, and n-bombs, and in-you-face, sexually explicit references, and disrepectful, hurtful, vicious, inciteful lyrics should be off our airwaves. When you see or know of people who do things in desparation that you know in your heart are wrong, and you know that the music you produce/promote routinely encourages that type of behavior, shame on you if you let it continue, lest promote it. When you do, you just let everybody know, you don't care about black-on-black crime, you don't care about innocent children falling prey to criminals, you don't care about high school dropouts... It's all about what's selling, it's all about the $$$$$$. Find the positive, keep the positive, show the love, be the love

R'D says:
Find the positive, keep the positive,,,,,,rare to see that kind of behaviour...
