Moby Calls Eminem Out for Murder
Monday, December 12, 2005 By: Michael Ivey
Singer Moby, clowned by Eminem in his “Without Me” video a few years ago, says the celebrated rapper created a hateful climate that led to murder. A British man was recently convicted of beating a woman to death with a bat and stuffing her body in a suitcase after the reported Eminem fanatic sang his songs in a Karaoke bar.
Though he wrote: “Maybe there's no connection. Maybe there is” on his website (Moby.com), Moby obviously feels Eminem’s music is somewhat responsible for the girl’s death. He vents, “Any employee of a record company or journalist or radio programmer or mtv employee who has promoted and celebrated misogynistic or homophobic music should be ashamed. You have blood on your hands, and you should be deeply, deeply troubled at the culture that you've helped to create.”
He feels it’s hypocritical for record companies and radio stations to promote “music that has lyrics about killing and brutalizing women and gays”, if they don’t encourage racially prejudiced or anti-semetic music.
Moby also targeted Prodigy, another Interscope/Aftermath emcee, for his 1997 song “Smack My Bitch Up.” “2 months after 'Smack My Bitch Up' was released I went to visit a friend of mine who was in hospital after being beaten by her boyfriend. She had brain damage and multiple fractures due to his pushing her down a flight of concrete stairs. Misogyny is not funny. It is not a joke and it should not be treated lightly.” None of the individuals or companies Moby criticized has released a response.
