DJ Drama Officially Joins Grand Hustle/Atlantic
Tuesday, January 3, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
According to Atlantic Records sources DJ Drama, producer of the popular “Gangsta Grillz” mix tape series, recently landed a “long term, worldwide” deal with Grand Hustle Entertainment. In 2005 Drama independently released sixteen of his twenty southern based mix tapes, featuring acts such as Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Webbie, and Pimp Squad Click (P$C). One third of the highly productive Apphiliates Music Group (DJ Don Cannon, DJ Sense) says “to be able to get a major record deal from pushing mix tapes in the streets is a great feeling for me as a DJ.”
Grand Hustle CEO Jason Geter and marquee act T.I. see the deal as a checkmate for both sides. “Throughout the years, we've worked hand in hand to build our brands. In 2006, we look forward to making history together”, says Geter. In 04/05 Drama built on the momentum created by “Gangsta Grillz”, by serving as T.I.’s DJ on the Jay-Z and Friends tour and Nelly’s Sweat/Suit tour. He has also spun behind everybody from Slum Village and Bahamadia to Lil Scrappy. T.I. believes “he's a very significant piece to our puzzle, and he brings incredible marketing opportunities to the company.”
Last month DJ Drama was named DJ of the Year and received the award for Best Mix tape, at Radio One’s Dirty Awards in Atlanta. And as for future Grand Hustle projects he doesn’t plan on slowing down. “'GANGSTA GRILLZ' means so much to the South and to the game, so people shouldn't expect nothing but the best-basically the same thing they have come to expect from anything I am a part of.” His latest releases include “Gangsta Grillz: The Leak” featuring T.I. and “Respect the Game” the DVD; for more information visit www.gangstagrillz.com.
