Talib Kweli Reaches Deal with Warner Bros.
Monday, January 9, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Following months of speculation former Rawkus/Geffen emcee Talib Kweli has finally struck a distribution deal with Warner Bros. Records. He and partner Corey Smyth formed Blacksmith Records in 2005 - first signing frequent Kweli collaborator Jean Grae. "Kweli is a touring artist, who is on the road 150 to 200 days a year, which is not the norm in hip-hop", says Smyth. "I feel that [WBR CEO] Tom Whalley and his staff understand that, and they will think outside the box when it comes to how we will market, promote and sell Kweli, Jean Grae, and future Blacksmith artists."
Jean Grae, formerly signed to indie label BabyGrande Records, has released two LP’s (This Week, Attack of the Attacking Things), an EP (Bootleg of the Bootleg) and a recent mix tape, entitled Hurricane Jean: The Jeanius Strikes Again. She’s currently working on her next solo project, intended to be Blacksmith/WBR’s first release.
Talib Kweli’s second solo and final Geffen Records album The Beautiful Struggle came out in 2004. Right About Now was released by independent distributor Koch Records in November, and is in stores now. Both he and Jean Grae are scheduled to release new records this coming Spring.
