PA Governor Signs Cool C’s Death Warrant
Friday, January 13, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Governor Ed Rendell signed away Philadelphia rap pioneer Cool C’s life this week. Thirty six year old Christopher "Cool C" Roney is doomed to die by lethal injection on March 9th for murdering Philadelphia police officer Lauretha Vaird in 1996.
Cool C was found guilty of killing the nine year veteran during a bungled bank robbery which included former collaborator Warren "Steady B" McGlone. McGlone was convicted and sentenced to life as an accomplice, but Philadelphia prosecutors fingered Roney as the gun man. Last year a Pennsylvania Supreme Court upheld the decision as did the U.S. Supreme Court.
Lauretha Vaird was the first female PPD officer killed on the job. With songs like "Glamorous Life" and the State Property sampled "Juice Crew Dis" ("When You Hear That") Cool C made room for Philadelphia rap in the 80’s. He released I Gotta Habit (1989) and Life in the Ghetto (1990) as a solo artist then joined Steady B and Ultimate Eaze as C.E.B. spawning the ironically titled Countin’ Endless Bank in 1993 (Ruffhouse Records).
