Nas Signs to Def Jam
Monday, January 23, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
The New York Times reports that the long rumored move to bring Nas to Def Jam is official. The paper sites unnamed sources who say Sony Music Group and Def Jam have agreed to split the profits or any losses for Nas’ next two albums, with Jay-Z paying to produce and market them. Both labels will plan and execute promotion. Nas will reportedly receive $3 million plus recording budgets for his next two LP’s.
There’s also a clause providing for two more albums through Def Jam. Speculation about this deal or something similar has increased in the three months following Nas and Jay-Z’s historic peace performances at Power 105.1 "Powerhouse 2005: Operation Takeover" Oct. 27th and 28th in New Jersey and Philly. The show was touted as Jay’s "I Declare War" diss concert, but he shocked everyone when he introduced Nas to sold out crowds and the two performed "Dead Presidents" . "All that beef sh-- is done, we had our fun. ... Let's get this money," said the president of Island Def Jam Records.
Nas comes to Def Jam on the heels of former foe Cam’ron’s recent Jay-Z disses which question his writing credits and degrade girl friend Beyonce Knowles.
