Nas' Def Jam Deal a Joint Venture

Friday, January 27, 2006
By: Michael Ivey

NASQueens hip hop veteran Nas won’t only release solo albums via his new Def Jam/Sony deal, he’ll also sign and push artists through his new imprint: The Jones Experience . Nas told Billboard in his first interview since he inked with President of Def Jam, Jay-Z that his experience tells him this is "a significant and excellent situation." "We're both excited by what this could potentially mean for hip-hop as a whole," he said.

The Jones Experience will focus "first and foremost on hip-hop" according to Nas, who is open to exploring other genres. "This is so much bigger than me and Jay-Z," he said. Signing announcements are expected in the coming months. The joint venture was a part of the deal that has Def Jam and Sony splitting profits or losses for Nas’ first two of four scheduled albums. Def Jam will handle A&R, promotion and distribution work, and both labels will market the releases.

Sony, which still owns masters of Nas’ lengthy catalogue, has the right to drop a greatest hits project. Nas must provide two new songs if Sony decides to make it and the label has rights to three tracks from Nas’ forthcoming Def Jam albums. Nas reportedly raked in an advance of over $3 million, the recording budget for each album.

Goddamn..nas did win!
Posted by K Smith
O yes of course nas won.
Posted by lyrical plebian
Cant wait 4 that sh*t!!!!
Posted by rossee
They both won!!!!! lyrically, they're both on the same level; its only their choice in [topics] that makes one say, one is better than the other. It all depends on your mind set, and whatever you're into in this point in your life.

W.o.w. This is the true start of a big change in the muisc industry!

Its good to see a positive outcome for a change.

Finally, the "man" himself gets some publicity and due "dough". I mean ery'body want nas to be all lyrical all the time! but when a n*ggah tryna make the dough - (like hes always had) the public dont want him to make mo' doh'. I say its time to get caked up on top of that cake he already got! big upz to jigga the n*gga!

Evenwhenilie,, yeah that might be true. .. I gotta think that ova for a while!

Yo to think about it what type of impact the jones experience will bring upon, to see how real and artistic.
Posted by virtuousmind
This is the basis on which we put our confidence in an mc-rapper that really gives us pure hardcore to the core music! lest face it he's a living legend. .. Just like the adjacent "artist" - jigga! lets see what the street disciple has in store!

Hope he signs quan.

Nas doin it big, signin with the "swagger jacker", 3 mill for the recordin budget, we know he gonna spend like 1.5 mill on kelis.
Posted by trapstar
I would like to see nas hit again with something hard, there's no doubt it would be hard anybody to follow up that classic sh*t illmatic, but we expect nothing less from nas, production will be a factor.

I dont know how to feel about this....3 million for tha budget??? thats alot for an emcee thats past his prime...and im not hating either. Im just saying jigga had tha ability to sell alot so its like he could always recoup or at least come out even. Thats alot of money involved nas gonna have to come up with...he wont see no money until def jam and sony recoup...man, its gotta be more to it than this...im wondering if nas gonna be able to sell like that...somewhere in my mynd i feel like they gonna attempt to bring allllllll tha hip hop gods into the equasion on his cds, but that will cost him.....good luck...im feeling it 50/50 ...after buying god son, streets diciple, lost tapes whatever i dont know.

Nas fans are gonna cop it anyways (which he has plenty) and then with jay and def jam doing the promotions and advertising he'll be alright. Jay's gonna make that happen for my dude. Its gonna be good

I got it---nas & jigga, w/ b doin vocals--produced by kanye
Posted by Polosan
Polosan i feel that but if you know tha music bizz just a little bit....those are artist that dont even ask for money off your budget..they will probably ask for points on the album....cause they are stars....but other than them hes gonna have to pay alot of up and coming cats...im thinking alica keys, maybe lauryn hill, badu, angie stone singing hooks....and maybe vocals dead prez, talib, common, kanye, roots....and even if he went that route compensation for that would naw that advance til it looked like beef jerky....lol. And i dont know nas finacial situation or nothing but i dont think he'll hit someone off with his advance, def jam or sony would have to do that...so thats still gonna go to his tab..eventually. Err'thang aint good as gold......ppl hate on jay but at least he had the heart to give a hip hop veteran a shot at shinning big tyme....better ask rakim and them old skool cats about getting someone to put money behind your project....

I have a question.... Is there anyway this album wont be a classic?
Posted by y bother
More power to them both. I love nas and always have. He does not have one album that is not tight. As far as getting a lot of other artists to get on it ..... Think about he's nas the one and only. The best thing out there right after tupac. Nas and jay aren;t even on the same level lyrically. Jay wasn't poppin' until biggie passed. I'm not hatin' either. There will be plenty of artists who would do the album just because it's nas. He doesn't need alot of collabo's though because his lyrics will and always have spoken for themselves.i can't wait for this album to drop.

I heard the new album gon be called "nasdaq jones"?
Posted by DjPhiziQue
I love whats happening with nas and jay. I'm a real big fan of jay but i'm also a fan of nas. Two great emcees together equals great music. Even though i think nas is passed his prime lyrically he's probably gonna go platinum with this one just because president carter's name is on it. And you know hova gonna push this album hard. Maybe nas will learn some business smarts from jay.

How many artists out there can say they got a deal with two different labels? n*ggas are lucky if they got enuff talent to be picked up by one. Nas is the last real n*gga alive.

Itwaswritten..........u read my mind
Posted by KDW5747
Talib is real, common, dead prez (m 1 and stic man), krs still records, how about tha roots...black thought and talib are in a tie in my books as the most underated emcees.... Streets diciple would have been an instant classic if he would have shortend it. I like how he addressed aids on sekou story, hopefully more artist look past beefs and tha usual to address that more.

I believe that nas is one of the best and it's about time that he got noticed fo it. Much love from bc
Posted by nasbitch1
All i know is them boys gon' put it down!!!
Posted by nawfsideHTown
Y bother, i hear that nas is going to work with kanye, just blaze and premier. Hearing about premier producing for nas again guarantees i'm going to get the next record, regardless.
Posted by monex5
Yo nas deserves this chance and i'm happy that my nig jigga gave him the chance i guess they will both succeed
Posted by toot75
Gave him the chance??!? nas don't need that n*gga's help! jay never did sh*t for nas. Nas became the best on his own. All jay ever did was become a target for the lyrical assasssin. I'm sure you didn't mean it like that. I just don't want any dumb mf's takin wat you typed the wrong way...
Posted by ItWasWritten
It's really good to see that hip-hop's best can put aside differences 4 the game's betterment. Ay nas nw u can promote az- just as good as nas and quan.
Posted by Recoba
Congrats to hip hops greatest rapper nasty nas. Man, this dude don come longs way, but people are really showing love. I predict on his sells he's going to drop big numbers. I also predict hes going to do alot more collabos with underground mc's and your favorite industry rappers. Also shouts out to jay, dudes smart by putting the beef behind and workin on the future. Holla (nable beats a nable squad productions )
Posted by nablebeats
Thank god nas... You do care about hiphop. Good move on that jay z sh*t yo...
Posted by Wily
Nas aint nothin but jay-z's new dame dash.......lol........
Posted by violentbydesign
Nas past his prime?! are u kidding me? since 91 till 06 he's put it down, and now with jay by his side, aint nobody cant outdoo my boy.
Posted by noahspeaks
Mennnni swear my bro told me about this signing and i didnt believe it. I think its a good move from the business point of view but i think it make nas look a lil weak though....but thats my way of looking at it. I think he (nas) won the battle between them two but i guess money makes the world go round. Jay-z offered a deal that some of nas caliber couldnt turn down....good luck to them both and the hip hop world in its entirety.
