Russell SimmonsNewark Mayor Sharpe James and TRI, Inc. today praised Def Jam co-founder and hip hop activist Russell Simmons for his dedication to building up the youth. "It's good to be acknowledged for the Hip-Hop Summit's work helping young people but, you know, it's all about the work and the work continues," he said.

The mayor will present Chairman Simmons with an award before over 2000 students at Weequahic High School in Newark, N.J, in association with Newark's teen empowerment program, Beyond The Cover Teen Magazine. In its’ sixth year Beyond The Cover offers corporate and entertainment sponsored scholarships and internships to students with interests in publishing, computer graphics, journalism, marketing, and community service.

The HSAN was established in 2001 as a non-profit outfit devoted to gearing "the cultural relevance of Hip-Hop music to serve as a catalyst for education advocacy and other societal concerns fundamental to the well-being of at-risk youth throughout the United States."
