Toure Interviews Jay-Z & Nas on BET

By: Michael Ivey

nas Jay-z InterviewJournalist/novelist Touré’s post reconciliation talk with enemies-turned-partners Jay-Z and Nas airs tonight on BET at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. Executive Producer of BET News Programming Selwyn Hinds says Beyond Beef draws viewers closer to the action than MTV’s All Eyes On: Jay-Z & Nas with Sway Calloway, their first joint interview since they joined forces at Def Jam late last year. "The MTV interview was very grand and in this open space, while our piece just has three cats- Jay, Nas and Touré, who look comfortable with each other and are having a real chat," he said.

The discussion centers around Jay and Nas’ heated battle, their mutual respect, and the state of hip hop. While MTV’s program saw the emcees allude to Cam’ron’s Jay-Z diss without mentioning his name, Hinds promises "a very distinct conversation about Cam’ron" on Beyond Beef.

"This is an interview, but it really is a conversation with three grown men talking about grown men shit," he said. Touré wrote a feature in the December issue of Rolling Stones magazine about Def Jam’s president called "The Book of Jay," an experience that made him the ideal interviewer for this session according to Hinds.

Touré has worked as a contributing editor for Rolling Stones since 1997, with features on 50 Cent, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Lauren Hill and DMX under his belt. He became CNN’s first ever "Pop Culture Correspondent" in 2004 and has published collections of fiction and his stories published in the Village Voice, the New York Times, the Believer, Playboy, Rolling Stones, and Tennis Magazine.

Kalliope4eva says:
Dayem...all these interviews..i hope its not like the one on mtv cause both of them boys looked suspect as hell. I mean, they have said that it is a money thing, but man that always turns out bad. (cube and n.w.a., n.w.a. And easy, dre and suge, parrish and e. Sermon, mac 10 and cash money, cam'ron and rocafella, and most recently game and 50..sports..karl malone and payton going to the lakers, terrell owens with illadelph) all unions made just for money it seems like. I dont deal with anyone that i cant get along with, and they trying to do it with major money involved. I love the idea im just interested on seeing how they are gonna deal with each other cause sway wasnt really pressing and i looked like jay and nas were saving each other in those hard questions, some of it was still in the air. Man, i hope two brothers come thru and make a classic because the idea is good but looking at history i dont know.

cense251 says:
Bet stay on some copy cat sh*t- trl/106 and pk- real werld/ college hill-cribs/how im living- jay and nas linked up already lets move past it and focus on some ill underground or ole skool talent and eliminate the wack sh*t in hip pop right now.

cense251 says:
Cuz the culture need some balance.

Eric young Infinite says:
That's real talk kalliope4eva, history is definitly not on there side, but hopefully history wont repeat itself, my frist thoughts of the all eyes on me interview with sway was mixed, although they were saying the right things, it still was a lot of unanswered questions so hopefully this interview will sheed a little more informaton into there history as foes, and their recent union, but overall i still feel this is something big for hip hop, the game really needs this, and like i said before, this a dream come true for me, i really ...really hope this god's son and jigga thing works.

Eric young Infinite says:
Cense251 you a F*ck*ng hater! balance these nuts in your mouth pussboy.

bravehearts36 says:
Cense251 your a dumbass. Your still a little kid going through puberty

pooky says:
Yall sound like lil kids lashin out and swearin . Hip hop is getting too pop and bet needs some shows that help black ppl and is somethin inspired from our culture. Bet is cool durin rap city and gospel on sundays but other wise its gettin wack ill just watch martin on tv one

cense251 says:
Thanks guys for the fan mail. I appreciate my fans checkin for me. Thanks guys lol!

spazzmatik101 says:
agree wit cense251 not about the copy cat stuff but about th underground and ol school stuff kuz the way that stuff is goin now wit rap err'body gone get shot up ova some dum sh*t......another tupac and bggie story.....history repeating itself

Eric young Infinite says:
True that, i agree that this rap game is weak as hell, it's a dam shame that all of these rap songs sound the same, that's why i dont listen to majority of the sh*t that's being played, that's why the nas and jay z union is so important, the game really needs this, i dont know about everybody else, but im tired of hearing 50 cent singing on songs, that laffy taffy sh*t, that lean and rock with it sh*t, camron garbage ass diss song etc.... It's time we take it back to the esscense, real hip hop, artist like little brother, the roots, jay z, nas, rahkim, jadakiss, lupe fiasco, common, outkast, eric young infinite, and many, many more, (wake up people)

andrew2626 says:
Ha cense i just e-F*cked your moms Bia'ch ass n*gga, eric young true except for jada but thats cool personally i think he a fabricated gangsta

cense251 says:
Werd andrew.... I hope she was pleasing to you. What i meant bet is on some copy cat sh*t is everything mtv do they and they do it sloppy and late. Over the last 6 yrs they have been doin a poor job representing blk culture/especially hip hop. Vh1, mtv, and mtv2 have portrayed hip hop in a better light than bet has. I mean mtv and vh1 play that commerical sh*t too, but then they come through with the history of hip hop-or specials on yo mtv raps and what not. Back in the days bet used to be on point, but ever since the network was sold to viacom they,ve been lacking in substance at the network.

cense251 says:
If ever dont like my comments- thas cool... Its all opinion, but i find it amussing when dudes come online verbally trashing me insulting my inteligence, or makin seggestions of engaging in lewd sexual acts with my mother. Lmao this is jus a chat forum theres no need to be hostile. Be easy fellas.

mrblue says:
Cense is 110%correct.bet has been really wack.most fcked moments in black history etc, while mtv has specials like growing up black in america.bet seems to have a problem showing blacks in a positive light.maybe they should change the name to net.thats who they cater to. I like paul mooney, but there's nuthin humorous or postive about dissin your own people.

cense251 says:
Thanks blue. But u realize now you goin be under attacked now by the online paparazzi for agreeing wit my comments.lol i also agree wit wut u said. There is nothing funny bout portraying the ignorance of ur people. Paul mooney was funny on that special, but im glad he was making fun of the ass holes on the count down whose actions keep pushin us back.

ItWasWritten says:
I dunno if cense said some dumb sh*t in the past, but what he's sayin now seems on point. Bet is 4eva doin sh*t that's been done b4. Personally, i'm a check this to see if they add anything new.

cense251 says:
Thanks written. Nah havent really spit no dumb sh*t not to my knowledge at least.

spazzmatik101 says:
As far as i have read on most of the somments cense s alwayz right on point so F*ck yall hatin ass n*ggas kuz he say sh*t real he dont play to that fake ass sh*t that most of yall portray

BigO says:
In this case i would have to agree with "cense", b.e.t. Has been biting off of other caucasian stations, and instead of being a trendsetter, it looks to me that b.e.t. Is a trendfollower. We have the talent we can, we should not be falling behind we need to stay ahead, the only real shows that b.e.t. Have that stays ahead of the game is; rap city, blackbuster (hot)!!, b.e.t. Late and comic view, oh and the gospel show. These are good moves, but we can move better and faster, and when i say we, i mean our people in a whole.

BIGBOYCAPRICE200 says:
They should have got someone else to interview them besides toure, homey and know what he was talkin bout..........

exnora says:
Yall know that bet and mtv are both owned by viacom right... So bet probably got the idea from mtv for most of their sh*t anyway

cense251 says:
Thanks for the love spazz and big 0. We all saying sh*t on here that need to be read. And since we dont have a public platform-posts like this is the next best thing to get ya point of view across. As for the knuckle heads all they need is some affection lol.

mrblue says:
Ya see cense, for every negative, there's about 5 positives.this is a representation of our people.is just a shame that a whole race gets the rap for a few idiots.

cense251 says:
See our people-which also expands to "so called latinos", asians, native americans, and other peoples of color who origins began in africa aka asia. We come from great legacies, dynasties, were powerful & smart, and innovative. But we became to trustin of "them") he realized that africa/asia was a goldmine and we allowed them to trick us; from then on hes been decieving, cheating, enslaving, dividing, murdering, and controlling us.

Kalliope4eva says:
Thats real talk cense....sounds like something i read in this book titled falsification of afrikan consciousness: eurocentric history, psychiatry and the politics of white supremacy by amos n. Wilson,...one of the best books i ever read...check it for more a more indepth view of what your saying..

cense251 says:
Aight bet! good looks ima check it out.

Eric young Infinite says:
I'll be checking for that book as well, as far as what i said about cense251, i feel that i overeacted, so i truelly apologize for my remarks, what you said is right, bet sucks now, i dont even watch that sh*t no more, 106 n park is'nt the same, rap city sucks, and all those ohter shows(except for uncut) are trash, i guess i had to really think about what you were saying, but now i understand, keep doing t=ya thing fam.

cense251 says:
No prob famz... Its all good sh*t happens. I think the friction began in that lupe-reebok article. When i was addressin somebody else-but my post was under yours. So it looked like i was talking to u.

Kalliope4eva says:
Two more smart brothas squashing beef.....tight. Yeah check for that, its a good read, now im on dead emcee schrolls by saul williams....just started but it seems tight.

MALAKI28 says:
Just give us a good cd, the rap game is wack now. As a matter of fact, it doesnt matter where your from, could someone give us a good cd with different beats and good lyrics, not a re-looped beats over and over. I dont care if your from vermont, we just need a good cd to listen too. What the F*ck is goin on here!!!!

spazzmatik101 says:
No doubt thats wut i like to hear we all is comin together as 1...thats good sh*t.......all yall gotta stay up

manny1 says:
Yea the rap game today is deff wak. But wateva i jus want to hear that nas street music that i luv 1

cense251 says:
Yea its all love. Why beef?! i agree its time hip hop do a 360 and move in the direction of orignality, skills, raw beats, and some balance. I mean laffy taffy is coo in the club-but that song cant be taken seriously-thas where the balance is needed- u play some d4l and then some blackmoon-or somethin

Eric young Infinite says:
Exactly, thats a tight idea, i wish i could find a spot that has a rotation of music like that, and just like kalliope4eva, spazzmatik101, and my man cense251 said, the beefing era is kinda dead know, it's time for emcees to flip the script and start collaborating more, what ever it takes to bring hip hop back to life.

cense251 says:
Exactly e.... No more to be said-u hit it on the head! i couldnt say it any better.

Kalliope4eva says:
Well i think they still have good music out there, but the middle men (the companies ) are still killing the system. They have the market on lock...its not easy to get the real stuff out. They put alot of money behind something like juelz santana and cats like that. They aint putting too much focus on tha roots or talib...most dont even know he put out another lp. They give em videos and all and put em on commercials and all. But up north should take a page from the southern playbook...its called power of the ppl. Laffy taffy didnt have money behind it, but if we stick behind it, the suits are gonna see it as a way to make money now. Almost any group in the south has little or no backing (besides himself)...i dont think lil flip had a suit behind him saying play this. We just need to buy more cd's and not bootlegs etc.

Kalliope4eva says:
Get the money in the hands of the right ppl (the artists not the bootleggers) they need to eat (git paid) so that they can make better tracks, better equipment, better material period. It'll all come back like a boomerang. They cant put nothing out if they dont have the resources (doe).

cense251 says:
U right sun. Bootleg the wack sh*t support the real kalliope dats a tru thing.

scorp333 says:
Yo this interviewer toure needs to be put on blast!! 4 anybody that didnt see this interview this kat had no fukin idea about nas & jay's career. At one point jay z had to correct him about the when both artist made their enterance into the game. On another note i hope we can see a solid album out of nas, life long fan but nas needs to dump les and salam remy as producers. Nas produced the best track on cd 2 of "streets diciple"!!!
