Mos Def May Make it Three Films for '06
Thursday, March 9, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Emcee/actor Mos Def is reportedly fielding negotiations to star in Tanya Hamilton’s Stringbean and Marcus, a love drama about two former Black Panthers, seen from the perspective of
a young girl.
"Mos is one of my favorite actors; he's fantastic," said producer Sean Costello. Costello maintains that both Mos (AKA Dante Smith) and Hotel Rwanda co-star (Oscar nominated) Sophie Okonedo are all but signed on to the project, which begins production this July in Philadelphia.
Debut writer/director Tanya Hamilton says Stringbean and Marcus, set in 1978, is less about race than, "ordinary people [live] under extraordinary circumstances, trying to outrun this past they all have." Her original screenplay was the first to earn a $50,000 Pew Fellowship grant from the Pew Foundation, which donates to "artists working in a wide variety of performing, visual, and literary disciplines." Mos Def can be seen in 16 Blocks with Bruce Willis and Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, both in theaters now.
