Lupe Fiasco Announces Album Release Date

By: Michael Ivey

Lupe FiascoMuslim emcee Lupe Fiasco, of "Touch the Sky" fame, announced recently that his debut album, Lupe Fiasco's 'Food & Liquor', is due out June 27th and explores some serious issues. "It's less of me trying to showcase my skills as an emcee and more about where I come from and really touching on issues I feel are valid," said Lupe.

'Food & Liquor' denotes Lupe’s struggle between the positive (food) and negative (liquor) in life. He grew up on Chicago’s gang and drug infested West Side, but Lupe says his music has progressed over the years. "About two or three years ago, my music was more street but it just played itself out. As you grow up, you start settling back to what you do normally so now the music I make is based on what I do on a regular basis." The 1st & 15th/Atlantic Records LP is executive produced by friend and mentor Jay-Z, plus features production by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West.

His first single "Kick Push," a tribute to skate culture, plays up a nerdy persona, but according to twenty four year old VP of 1st &15, "It's not deliberate -- that's really me." "If you look at what I do on a daily basis, you'd be like, 'Wow, he's a nerd." Nerd or not, the public is definitely getting to know Lupe. In the past few months he has been featured in Fader magazine, Vibe and XXL and a interview last year right here on NobodySmiling.com. He has also featured on Kanye West’s new video for "Touch the Sky." Lupe recently joined fellow rappers Mike Jones and Lil Wayne in designing and advertising Reebok’s new "O.G." footwear collection. Referring to the move that assisted both Jay-Z and 50 Cent brand themselves successfully, Lupe says, "It's definitely a boost for more exposure because I have billboards all over Chicago and all over the nation."

Yes sir, chi town is in the building, west side to be exact, this is bigger than the music, chi town has been waiting to get inside the doors of the rap game, sure we have kanye, twista, common, but thats pretty much it, we need more people to get on because chicago is a gold mine when it comes to hip hop, we have some of the best rappers that no one has ever heard of, like myself for example, but on the real, lupe is the truth, chi town on rise, and you dont really want a problem with us guys.
