Atlantic Brass Says Fat Joe Still on Board
Thursday, March 16, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Co-Chairman/COO of Atlantic Records group Craig Kallman recently issued a statement thwarting rumors that thirteen year industry veteran Fat Joe is leaving Atlantic Records. "Fat Joe is an icon in the hip-hop community - an artist, producer, writer, tastemaker, and entrepreneur with tremendous vision, influence, and creativity. We are proud to have had Fat Joe as a member of the Atlantic family for the past eight years, and we are looking forward to continuing our great relationship with Joe and his Terror Squad label," said Kallman.
Craig Kallman began dee jaying at New York’s Cat Club and working in Columbia’s dance department in the early eighties. He was a college representative for CBS Records while at Brown University and promoted for Factory Records after graduation. Kallman worked in the chart department at Billboard Magazine and continued to DJ before kicking off his House music label, Big Beat Records.
He entered Atlantic Records in 1991, when the company acquired Big Beat, as VP/Assistant to Co-Chairman Doug Morris. Kallman was later promoted to Executive VP and assigned Atlantic’s entire A&R department. Aaliyah, Brandi and Lil Kim emerged during Kallman’s tenure. He was named Co-President of Atlantic Records in January 2002, the same year Sean Paul sold five million copies of Dutty Rock and was nominated for a Grammy. When Atlantic absorbed Elektra Records in March 2004, Kallman became Co-Chairman/COO of the new Atlantic Records Group.
