Three 6 Mafia Awarded Memphis’ Key to The City
Wednesday, April 5, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Oscar-winning trio Three 6 Mafia were honored last weekend in their Memphis, Tennesse hometown for their unprecedented hip-hop achievement.
Mayor Willie W. Herenton presented the rap group with the Key to the City, and a spot on the Memphis version of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame for being the first rap group to ever take home an Oscar for Best Original Song. The group won the award for penning “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp,” featured on the soundtrack to acclaimed film “Hustle & Flow.”
During a special red carpet reception, the group was given the prestigious "Note on Beale Street," the Memphis version of a "star on Hollywood Boulevard" at the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum.
While Memphis is known as the home of the blues and birthplace of rock 'n' roll, Three 6 Mafia became the first "Note on Beale Street" to represent hip-hop. Their plaque will join R&B/funk pioneers The Bar-Kays’ tribute on permanent display in the museum.
