Eminem Comments on Friend’s Death
Friday, April 14, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Eminem, who last week filed for divorce from his wife Kim, recently went public with his feelings about the death of his friend and collaborator Proof. "You don't know where to begin when you lose somebody who's been such a big part of your life for so long. Proof and I were brothers," said Eminem.
As demonstrated by Mekhi Phifer in Eminem’s semi-biographical film ‘8 Mile,’ Proof encouraged and mentored Eminem on his rise to hip hop prominence. "Without Proof's guidance and encouragement there would have been a Marshall Mathers, but probably not an Eminem and certainly never a Slim Shady," said Eminem. Proof was shot to death early Tuesday morning outside the CCC club in Detroit, but Eminem wants to focus on celebrating the life of his funny, smart, charming friend. "Not a day will go by without his spirit and influence around us all. He will be missed as a friend, father and both the heart and ambassador of Detroit hip hop," said Eminem.
The shooter, a bouncer at the club and the cousin of the man Proof reportedly shot first after an argument, turned himself in to Detroit police Wednesday. Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens says that if investigators find that Mario Etheridge was acting in defense of himself or his cousin, Keith Bender Jr., has not been charged with murder. Etheridge has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in a building.
