LL Cool J, Nas and others Urge Financial Responsibility
Monday, April 24, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Thirty years ago, hip-hop was deemed nothing more than an inner-city fad. But since then, it grew to become a lucrative powerhouse generating billions of dollars and influencing trends all around the world.
With that in mind, several rap stars spoke on the importance of money management over the weekend at the Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment, hosted by multi-millionaire mogul Russell Simmons.
The event was attended by LL Cool J, Nas, T.I., Alicia Keys, and several financial experts who provided advice on home ownership, budgets, credit cards, and other money-related issues.
“The biggest misconception probably comes from the hip-hop community itself … that the money lasts forever,” platinum-selling rapper LL Cool J said. “You have to do the right thing with it.”
Fellow Def Jam artist Nas also stressed the importance of teaching young fans about how to handle their money. “It’s time that we do something to educate our kids,” he said.
“We’ve got to think about our future, think about tomorrow. It’s beyond the corner, it’s beyond the jails. We’ve got to think about growing old in this game.”
