G-Unit Rappers Give Back to The Community
Saturday, April 29, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
50 Cent has become the spokesperson for a nationwide cooking competition aimed at preventing childhood obesity, sponsored by Glauceau – the company partly owned by 50 and that sells his grape-flavored Vitamin Water drink, Formula 50.
High school student chefs will compete to create the most “nutrient-rich” cafeteria lunch recipe, and the winner is to receive a $100,000 college scholarship.
The 29-year-old rap star said he thinks “it’s a lot more difficult for kids” to stick to a healthy diet. “I had all of the unhealthy habits,” he said. “Soda … a lot of fast food, all those things.” Today, he exercises regularly and has a healthy eating habit, courtesy of a personal chef.
G-Unit members Young Buck and Tony Yayo are also giving back via the group’s G-Unity Foundation, Inc.
Buck recently donated $5,000 to Nashville, Tennessee’s Fannie Battle Day Home for Children for much-needed sports equipment.
“I never thought that I'd be in a position to give back to the Nashville community,” said Buck, who back in December surprised the Home with a holiday pizza party and toys for everyone. “I feel good giving back to the kids because at the end of the day, they are the future, and without them Young Buck wouldn't be who he is."
Meanwhile, Yayo has donated $17,000 to Brooklyn’s Ronald Edmonds Learning School Middle School 113, which has given 64 boys and girls the opportunity to participate in the Center’s Annual Young Men’s and Women’s College Tour.
"I wish back then I had people to show me what college was like because I know I would have wanted to go,” said Yayo. “Looking back on it, I wish I had gone to college.”
