Tuesday, May 9, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Fashion designer Marc Ecko has enlisted some Hip Hop luminaries to assist his 2nd annual crusade to preserve three endangered species of rhino.
Rakim and Common will headline "Marc Ecko’s Save the Rhinos 2nd Annual Benefit Concert" June 8 in Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield, with Chicago upstarts Lupe Fiasco and Rhymefest performing as well. DJ Z-Trip and Kid Capri will man the turntables.
All proceeds from the concert will go to the International Rhino Foundation to continue its’ effort to save the Indian, Black, and Sumatran rhinos. Last year’s event, starring The Roots, De La Soul, and MF Doom, raked in $150,000. "Last year, we welcomed an extraordinary crowd to our first annual Save the Rhinos benefit concert, raising much needed awareness of the plight facing these majestic animals," said Ecko. "Building on the success of that event, am delighted to bring another great line-up to Central Park this June."
Tickets are available through ticketmaster for $36 and cost $40 the day of the show. Doors open at 5pm and performances begin at 6pm. Marc Ecko is the youngest member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s board of directors. He founded "the rhino brand," ecko unltd, in 1993 and since then Marc Ecko Enterprises has grown to include Marc Ecko "Cut & Sew" (a contemporary menswear line launched Fall 2004); G-Unit® clothing and accessories (a joint venture with multi-platinum musician, 50 Cent); Zoo York® (a line of action sports-inspired clothing and accessories); and Avirex® Sportswear Collection (a mid-tier brand launched Spring 2005). The company also developed the graffiti culture game Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.
