A Tribe Called Quest to Reunite for Tour, Drop Solo Projects
Tuesday, May 16, 2006 By: John Kennedy
With the resurgence of the mid-1990s Native Tongues sound in Kanye West, Little Brother, Lupe Fiasco and others, the legendary and highly influential group A Tribe Called Quest is planning a reunion tour for this fall.
Group member Ali Shaheed Muhammad told MTV News that the ATCQ tour is being planned for October or November.
“We never knew that [after] all these years, people would be interested,” said Muhammad. “When we disbanded, we never had any intentions of coming back.”
Although the group may tour together, there is no promise of a reunion album.
“As far as doing any albums, there's still a question mark on that,” Muhammad said. “We're not that far along yet. We're going to take these shows and see how it goes.”
Muhammad continued to tell MTV that The Tribe does not want to tarnish its track record, so much thought will go into the decision of making a comeback album.
While fans will keep fingers crossed for the ATCQ reunion disc, they can be confident of individual records from members Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, and Ali. All are reportedly working on solo records.
“I know people are like, ‘Enough with the solos. Can we get a Tribe joint?’” Muhammad shared. “For us, that kind of love makes us feel really good.”
In related news, Ali just finished working on Re-Bop: The Savoy Remixes, a jazz and hip-hop hybrid that was released last week. Ali reworked Curtis Fuller’s “Five Spot After Dark” for the project. DJs and producers like Jazzy Jeff and Large Professor also contributed to the album.
