DJ Sickamore New A&R at Atlantic Records
Tuesday, May 16, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
DJ Sickamore, known for his street mixtapes, is the newest addition to the A&R staff at Atlantic Records. "I have set artists and I have to take care of their projects," said Sickamore. He will not only scout talent for the label but is charged with guiding projects and choosing beats for imprints such as Fort Knox (Just Blaze) Grand Hustle (T.I.), Affiliates Music Group (DJ Drama), Choppa City (B.G.) and 1st & 15th (Lupe Fiasco).
Apparently Sickamore landed the job via a relationship with Atlantic’s Senior Vice President of Urban A&R Kyambo "Hip-Hop" Joshua that he forged when the two worked with Atlantic emcee Saigon. "I originally brought Saigon to Just Blaze's Fort Knox Entertainment," revealed Sickamore. "After that I did the deal with Tru Life at Roc La Familia. Then I started ‘I Can Make You Famous’ and I was all over the country--Miami, Vegas, Houston, The Bay Area, scouting talent and doing things."
Sickamore’s first assignment is to guide and oversee the soundtrack to HBO's Entourage. The album will reportedly feature Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, T.I., Paul Wall, B.G., Young Dro, Twista, Sean Paul and Saigon, who appeared in an episode of the series. The DJ says the best part of his new gig is that he gets to continue his mixtape work; up next is the second volume of Overnight Celebrity: The Street Power 30, on which he ranks his top 30 unsigned U.S. artists.
His company, I Can Make You Famous Entertainment, was launched in 2003 as an artist development/consultant firm. Sickamore began deejaying his sophomore year in high school and has produced dozens of mixtapes during his career.
