Ludacris Says Anti-Oprah Comments Exaggerated
Wednesday, June 7, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Atlanta-based rapper Ludacris, who criticized Oprah Winfrey for her supposed bias against hip-hop, recently said he feels his comments have been exaggerated.
“I do think the media has kind of blown this whole thing out of proportion,” he said. “Oprah is a great individual. Everything she has accomplished for herself, we all look up to that.”
Ludacris, born Chris Bridges, was invited on Oprah’s popular talk show last year in promotion of the Oscar-winning film Crash, but instead Oprah berated him for his controversial rap lyrics. The multi-platinum artist later spoke about the incident to GQ magazine – and since then, rappers 50 Cent and Ice Cube have also publicly criticized Oprah for her lack of hip-hop coverage.
However Ludacris said although he’s not happy with Oprah’s thoughts about rap music, she is still an important role model and urged fans not to boycott her show.
"I disagree on one issue but that doesn't mean you don't like them or still have love for them,” he said. “We're on a show about not judging people and I automatically got judged. She got on there and said she didn't agree with my lyrics, and I will respect her opinion or not.”
“I defended myself on the air, and when the show aired my defensive comments were taken out. All I want from her is to respect my opinion also. … By Oprah not having rappers on the show that says to me that we are the scum of the earth. Maybe she feels that rappers degrade women."
Ludacris insists he would welcome the chance to return to Oprah’s show to discuss rap music. "She might try to have a show with just rappers on there to make a point. I'd do it if it was a live show because who's to say they wouldn't do the same thing again, where my comments get stripped."
