Loon Takes Indie Route, Calls Mase Out
Friday, June 23, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Former Bad Boy artist Loon is taking the independent route on his upcoming album, No Friends, to be released on his label Boss Up Entertainment.
“The reason I called it ‘No Friends’ is because this is the first project that I’ve put together by myself,” explains Loon.
Since most fans remember Loon primarily for his radio-friendly serenades “I Need A Girl” and “Down For Me,” he also wants to dispel his initial Bad Boy image of being a ladies’ man.
“I put it together to put something out for the streets and show some diversity and balance, things I never got to show on Bad Boy. This is me collaborating with my own artists and putting together some treats that people might not be used to be hearing from Loon.”
Loon, born Chauncey Hawkins, also addresses his recent fall out with fellow Harlem artist Mase, the two of whom used to be members of the rap collective Harlem World in the late 1990s.
On the diss song “What Happened To Pastor?,” Loon questions Mase’s apparent flip-flopping between rapping and being a pastor – a move that has left many confused over Mase’s true motives in the rap game.
“I got the record out there on my own independently and it made its waves,” Loon says. “Now that you’ve got Mase’s music pushed by the G-Unit machine, even though my record was hotter, his got visibility. I wanted people to hear my lyrical achievement.”
There is currently no release date on Loon’s forthcoming album.
