Kalliope, you speak truth. Big was rappin over west coast styled beats. I don't think he killed east coast / nyc hip hop though. The east coast started following after n.w.a. Dropped n***az for life. That album blew up the charts as soon as it came out; nyc said, "oh that's how you do it" and sh!t ain't been the same since. East coast always been about their lyrics, but after n.w.a., everybody felt the need to tell how street, gangsta, thug they were. Before n.w.a., you barely heard cursin on an east coast record, that's how lyrical it was. Imo the east changed up after n.w.a.

Jay z, east coast sound... I don't know. "reasonable doubt" had that sound. Preemo's tracks had it. A few other songs had it, but a lot of jay's beats after reasonable doubt were more "universal", thus jay got universal appeal. Jay did not stay with the boom bap, the d.j. Scratch... That's part of what kept new york artist in new york. Personally, i've been waiting for that "new york sound". I found it in florida with superiority complex and basic vocab.
